Abstract
1,096,375. Electric resistance heaters. SCHLADITZ-WHISKERS A.G. July 27, 1965 [July 28, 1964], No. 31975/65. Heading H5H. An electric resistor for rapidly heating gases, liquids, aerosols, gels, suspensions comprises a heating element in the form of a skeleton of mutually interlocking conducting needles, rods or hair-like elements providing a very large surface area. The elements are enclosed in a non-conducting casing and may be of mono- or polycrystalline metals or alloys, metallized glass, quartz or organic fibres or monocrystalline whiskers of Al oxide, they may be hollow or have a thin insulating layer of lacquer, oxide or plastics material and are grown together or soldered, welded or sintered together and to the walls of the casing. The casing may be cylindrical or conical, to achieve non-uniform heating, with highly porous electrodes at either end of the element. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a disc-shaped resistor with a central aperture is enclosed in a flat cylindrical casing (a<SP>11</SP>) to form a peripheral inlet chamber (g). Circular electrodes (d), (e) are attached to the resistor and fluid passed through the element, exhausting through a passage (h). A number of disc-shaped resistors, Fig. 4 (not shown), may be placed in the cylinder separated by coils (i) which provide additional heating by induction. The apparatus may be used for cracking hydrocarbons, fractional distillation and ionisation of gases.
