Abstract

1,095,410. Suspending agents in polymerization systems. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. Nov. 28, 1966 [Jan. 11, 1966], No. 1232/66. Headings C3C and C3P. Polymerization of olefinically unsaturated monomers is carried out in an aqueous suspension system that contains as suspending agent a surface-active agent and a copolymer of vinyl pyrrolidone with an ester of an acrylic acid. The exemplified monomer is styrene. The surface-active agents may be anionic, non-ionic or cationic, preferably anionic, e.g. the alkalimetal salts of organic sulphonic acids, and are preferably substantially insoluble in organic solvents. The composition comprising a surface-active agent and a copolymer of vinylpyrrolidine with an ester of an acrylic acid, wherein the surface-active agent is substantially insoluble in organic solvents is claimed per se. Volatile liquid blowing agents, e.g. pentane, may be present during polymerization and result in the production of foamable resin beads (see Example 5).
