Abstract

1,085,155. Electrostatic generators. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 1, 1965 [July 3, 1964], No. 28001/65. Heading H2A. [Also in Division D1] In apparatus for twisting fibres by subjecting them to forces derived from a static field extending from feed means to twisting means, the twisting means is combined with a machine of the Van der Graaff type which serves as a high-voltage source of the field. In Fig. 3, the twisting means is a passage 49 coaxial with a roller 45 and receives fibres from an inlet funnel 8 and delivers yarn to a sleeve 50. The funnel and sleeve are of insulating material and the inlet end of the passage 45 terminates at the surface of a conducting sphere 40 supported on but insulated from a base 42, in which sphere the roller 45 is mounted. The roller is electrically connected to the sphere, and is rotated by a belt 43 from a driving roller 44 on the base. Combs 46, 47 remove charges from the two passes of the belt. The sphere and the twisting means become charged at high voltage and the base is connected to the other terminal of the field at the feed means.
