Abstract
Unsaturated aliphatic nitriles are prepared by contacting a gaseous mixture of a corresponding a -olefine having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms, ammonia and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing antimony, iron and oxygen according to Specification 983,755 which comprises introducing into the gaseous reaction mixture, as a selectivation agent, arsenic trioxide or arsenic pentoxide. The preferred catalysts as claimed in the above Specification have an iron:antimony atomic ratio in the range 1:0.11 to 1:20. The selectivation agent may be introduced in a continuous or discontinuous manner in the gaseous state, in the form of an aqueous solution optionally containing ammonium hydroxide or in the solid state supported on a carrier such as pumice stone. The quantity of selectivation agent introduced preferably represents between 0.01 and 5 gram per cubic metre of the gaseous reaction mixture. The reaction may be carried out in a fixed or fluid bed reactor. The ammonoxidation of propylene to acrylonitrile is described. Comparative examples are given and the optimum conditions are demonstrated.
