Bricks are fed to a stacking and wire-tying machine (10) (Fig. 1, not shown) by means which can turn some of the bricks through 90 degrees so that at least one layer of the final stack is arranged differently from the remaining layers. The bricks are pushed laterally from an endless conveyer (1) (Fig. 1, not shown), or from a reciprocating pusher conveyer (30) (Fig. 3, not shown) to lie in front of a ram (11) (Fig. 1) or (45) (Fig. 3) which pushes them into the stacking machine. The guideway (5) over which the bricks are pushed by the ram (11) can be turned through 90 degrees (Fig. 2, not shown) so that the ram (11) subsequently pushes the bricks in pairs into the stacking machine; these bricks are thus at right-angles to those previously fed. Alternatively two bricks out of each row pushed laterally from the conveyer (30) (Fig. 3) on to a table (32) may be stored between guides (43) while the remainder are pushed into the stacking machine; when the guides (43) are full of bricks they are turned, together with a rotary plate (42), to provide a row of bricks at right-angles to the subsequent rows for pushing into the machine. The stacking machine may be constructed as in Specification 47234/64, and holes may be left in the stack to receive the tines of a lift truck. An automatic control determined by a count of the number of rows of bricks fed may change the orientation of the bricks and the number of bricks in a row as required.
