Abstract
Ferro-magnetic core laminations for electrical apparatus are provided with a coating of glass or glass-ceramic, the coating being fired on and having a coefficient of linear expansion lower than that of the laminations so that, on cooling after firing, the laminations are stressed in tension. The glass composition may be within the following range of percentages by weight: .SiO2.30.0-65.0 .B2O3.0-25.0 .Al2O3.0-15.0 .ZnO.0-14.5 .BaO.0-36.0 .MgO.0-4.0 .CaO.0-10.0 .K2O.0-11.0 .Na2O.3.5-19.5 .Li2O.0-2.4 .CoO.0-0.5 .NiO.0-0.5 the total divalent metal oxides being within the range 5.5-50.5% and the total monovalent metal oxides being within the range 11.0-20.0%. The glass is formed into frit which is powdered and added to water with an anti-setting agent or methylated spirits to form a suspension. Aluminium oxide, zirconium oxide or calcined clay may be added to the suspension which is applied to the laminations by spraying or dipping. Alternatively, dry glass powder may be applied to the laminations electrostatically. The laminations may be of 3% silicon iron and may be fired whilst stacked together, possibly in a reducing or non-oxidizing atmosphere so that the powder coating may be fused and bond the laminations together, the temperature being chosen, if desired, so that annealing of the laminations is also effected. Six examples using varying glass compositions and melting and firing temperatures &c., and giving different tensile stresses in the laminations, are described.
