Abstract

1,071,474. Steering aricraft nosewheels. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. Sept. 30, 1965 [Oct. 2, 1964 No. 40259/64. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions B8, F1 and F2] The lower part 10a of the tubular leg 10 of an aircraft nosewheel undercarriage is rotated by means of a plurality of piston and cylinder units 15, 18 having cam followers 17 which act on a cam track 11 of multi-lobe waveform formed by a pair of cam rings 12, 13 secured to part 10a. The cylinders are reciprocated over fixed pistons 18 by the supply of pressure fluid alternately to cylinder spaces 24, 25 under the control of a rotary valve 32 driven by means of a chain 46 and sprockets 45 and 47 on the valve and part 10a, respectively. The pistons 18 are fixed to a bracket 16 secured to the leg 18 and the cylinders 15 reciprocate in slides 151, Fig. 5 (not shown), depending from bracket 16, recirculating ball bearings 152 being provided between the cylinders and slides. The units 15, 18 are individually removable from the assembly. The piston and cylinders units may be single-acting, some units urging their cam followers against cam ring 12 and the other units urging their followers against ring 13.
