Abstract
1,069,447. Filling tanks. LIQUID GAS ANLAGEN UNION G.m.b.H. May 7, 1964 [May 7, 1963; Dec. 10, 1963], No. 19142/64. Heading B8T. An installation for transferring a low-boiling liquid e.g. propane or butane, to or from a container therefor, e.g. a ship's container 1, under varying conditions of temperature and pressure, includes heat-exchangers 2 and 4, a compressor 3 and a pump 5, and associated pipe lines and valves. One side of the heat-exchanger 4 is connected either to the heated cooling water of the ship's engines or with cold sea water, to provide a heating or cooling of the low-boiling liquid. The pump 5 may draw liquid from the container 1 through the heat-exchanger 2 and deliver it via a valve 35 to containers on shore. Liquid from shore containers at a relatively high or low temperature may be supplied through pipe lines 12, 15 to the ship's container, and is cooled or heated respectively so that the liquid stored is at a sufficiently low temperature to obviate the need for high-pressure storage containers. When relatively high-temperature liquid is fed to the container 1, the vapours formed are drawn by the compressor 3 through the heat-exchanger 2, operating as a liquid trap, and condensed and liquefied in the heatexchanger 4, the condensed liquid then passing back to the container via a control valve 11. When relatively low temperature liquid is taken on board, it is fed to one side of the heatexchanger 4 and heated, the vapours being sucked into the compressor and passed to the heat-exchanger 2 which condenses it. The liquid levels in the exchangers 2 and 4 are adjusted by devices 21, 23 and 20, 22, respectively. In order to evacuate ships' containers to low pressures, the installation may include a three-stage compression set connected to three heat exchangers. In a modified installation two compressors are utilized, and a separate refrigeration circuit of ammonia is provided between the two heat-exchangers, and the condensation heat of the circulated ammonia is given up to cold sea water supplied to the one heat-exchanger.
