Abstract

1,067,100. Injection moulding. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 7, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963; Dec. 23, 1963], No. 40855/64. Heading B5A. In a method of injection moulding a thermoplastic article (e.g. a tumbler) having rotational symmetry, one element of the mould is rotated with a force such that rotation continues until the thermoplastic material solidifies whereby multi-directional orientation is imparted to the material and a stronger article is produced. The material is preferably injected at a point offcentre with respect to the rotational axis. The machine illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown) comprises an injection cylinder (14) connected through a check valve (52) and flexible feed line with a preplasticizer (Fig. 2, not shown). The cylinder (14) contains an injection plunger (12) and valve (10) operated by separate hydraulic accumulators. The male mould part (40) is rotated by a presettable constant torque motor (48) through a gear assembly (50).
