Abstract

1,065,945. Magnetrons; travelling-wave tubes. SFD LABORATORIES Inc. March 15, 1965 [March 13, 1964], No. 10893/65. Heading H1D. A magnetron or a crossed-field travelling- wave tube with a cylindrical cold cathode or cathode sole and a surrounding circular or part-circular anode wave circuit has a permanent magnet within the cathode or cathode sole and inside the envelops for generating the magnetic field. The cathode end hats form polepieces for the magnet. The invention is described as applied to a noise generator with a non-re-entrant interdigital wave circuit in which the fingers are bifurcated to introduce inductive loading. A built-in, short-circuited coaxial output line, extending parallel to the axis of the tube, is connected to the wave circuit by a radially extending finger between the inner conductor of the line and the end segment of the wave circuit. The cathode may operate with high field emission in which case H 2 , A or Xe gas is introduced at a pressure of 10<SP>-1</SP> mm. Hg., or the cathode may be secondary emissive. Heat is conducted from the magnet via the cathode structure support stem to an external heat sink, but the magnet is radially spaced from the inside wall of the cathode emitter to reduce thermal conduction from the cathode to the magnet. The invention may be applied to a forward or backward wave amplifier tube or to a strapped magnetron oscillator with a reentrant wave circuit.
