[Also in Division B8] A rail vehicle 1, Fig. 1, for transporting a road vehicle, e.g. a semitrailer, comprises a frame 9 having a platform 4 on which is pivotable about a vertical axis 28, a turntable 25 which receives the road vehicle rear wheels when loading and facilitates ease of loading, the upper face of the platform 4 being substantially at the same level as the highest points on the rail vehicle wheels 8, the platform being lowerable from and raisable into the position shown by hydraulic jacks 27 carried by a transverse girder 26 and urged into the raised position by a spring 6 on a transverse beam 5. The turntable 25 may be displaceable longitudinally of the rail vehicle by means of its pivot engaging in a guide slot as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown). According to another embodiment the turntable is replaced by a pivotable channel-section rail or rails for receiving the road vehicle rear wheel or wheels at one or both sides of the road vehicle. The pivotable rail or rails is or are pivoted to one side or both sides of the platform as described with reference to Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown). The pivoted rail or rails may also be movable longitudinally of the platform.
