Abstract

1,059,041. Escalators. EXPRESS LIFT CO. Ltd. Nov. 19, 1965 [Jan. 4, 1965], No. 243/65. Heading B8A. An endless handrail 5 extending around a transparent balustrade 4 arranged one on each side of an escalator 1 is driven by opposed pairs of rollers 13, 14 located within a trunking 12 in the lower part of the balustrade 4. One of the driving rollers 13 is driven by means of a chain 19 and a sprocket 17 from the means driving the escalator and in turn drives the other driving rollers 13 by means of sprockets 18 and chains 23. The reaction rollers 14 are connected in pairs by links 24 which have a central biasing means 25 to urge the rollers 13, 14 into contact with the handrail 5. The faces of the rollers 13, 14 are covered with an elastic material, e.g. rubber or polyurethane. The handrail is guided around the ends of the balustrade by rollers 11.
