Abstract

1,056,323. Electromagnetic relays. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 23, 1964 [June 28, 1963], No. 25935/64. Heading H2B. The threshold operating current value of an assembly comprising a sealed magnetic reed contact unit, e.g. 11a, 11b, and a biasing permanent bar magnet 24 adjacent thereto is set by rotating the contact unit relative to the magnet. The threshold values of the two contact units 11a and 11b are matched in this way by the following method. The assembly of magnet 24 and contact units 11a + 11b were inserted in a test coil which was energized by a pulse which produced a magnetic flux aiding that of magnet 24 and the operating times of the units were compared on an oscilloscope. Demagnetizing pulses were then applied to the test coil and were adjusted until the operating time of the slower contact unit equalled a predetermined value. The faster contact unit was then rotated about its longitudinal axis until its operating time was the same as the slower unit. The permanent magnet was then demagnetized until the threshold operating current reached a preselected value whereupon the contact units were secured in their adjusted positions relative to the permanent magnet by an epoxy resin. The sequence of the various matching operations may be varied, and the faster or slower contact unit may be rotated depending on whether the reeds are initially edge-on or face-on to the magnet. In Fig. 1, the envelopes of the contact units are seated in recesses 44 formed in end plugs 38 of the coil former.
