Abstract

1,055,611. Loading articles on to trays; endless conveyers; trays. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. May 7, 1965 [Sept. 8, 1964], No. 36768/64. Headings B8A, B8C and B8P. As rows of cans 1 (Fig. 5, not shown) are pushed from a table 7 they engage a portion 26 of-a carriage 8 which is thereby moved to bring a tray 2 from beneath the table 7 to receive the cans. A -full charge for the tray 2 may be delivered in one operation, or the rows may be delivered singly, the carriage 8 being held from running back either by a ratchet or by engagement of the cans with the leading edge 27 of the table 7. After the tray has been fully charged it is delivered to a shrink-wrapping machine 21 (Fig. 1, not shown) by a ram 20 which carries a device 24, 25 for stripping the top tray from a stack biased upwardly in a magazine 14. A pawl 28 on the ram 20 may feed the trays. The rows of cans may be pushed on to the tray by a pusher 6 (Fig. 3, not shown) provided with a guard 6a which prevents further cans being delivered by the conveyer 3 until the pusher 6 is retracted. The trays may be formed with portions 2a (Fig. 7, not shown) for locating the cans, and may be of double-corrugated board, of thermoplastic material or of aluminium foil. The invention may be applied to packaging jars, tennis balls, apples and other articles.
