Abstract

Ethylenically-unsaturated monomers are produced by a process which comprises forming a film containing the monomer and bringing together within the film sulphur dioxide and an organic hydroperoxide. Preferably a film-forming polymer is dissolved in the monomer containing one component of the catalyst combination; then a film is made of this composition, which film is then contacted with the other catalyst component. In examples, polymers such as cellulose acetate butyrate, polyvinyl acetate, polymethyl methacrylate, polymethyl acrylate, polyoctyl acrylate, polydiethylene glycol sebacate and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate are dispersed in monomers such as methyl and ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and diacrylate, N-isopropylacrylamide, diethylene glycol diacrylate, and 1,1,1-trimethylol propane thiacrylate, spread into a film, and polymerized on contact with sulphur dioxide. Alternatively, a film can be formed comprising a monomer and hydroperoxide and a second film can be formed comprising the same or different monomer and sulphur dioxide; the two films will then polymerize together on being placed in contact. The film may be formed on panels made of steel, wood, plastic &c., or may be formed on filaments made of, for example, polypropylene and copper. Polymerization may also take place in the presence of fillers and stabilizers.
