Abstract
1,055,135. Two-part couplings. PLESSY-UK Ltd. Feb. 4, 1964 [Feb. 4, 1963]. No. 4728/64. Heading H2E. An electrical socket contact has three distinct sections, namely a contact-making section I, a retaining section II, and a terminal section III, the retaining section having resilient lugs 5 which engage behind a shoulder in the body, and the terminal member having at least two sets of gripping lugs 15 and 25, the whole assembly is made from at least two different pieces of metal. The contact section I is formed from a single stamping and comprises two pairs of resilient arms 1 and two portions 2 to make contact on the opposite faces of the inserted plug member and rigid (or less resilient) parts 4 and 40, which both give mechanical strength to the socket, part 4 also acting as a guide for the mating pin, and part 40 acting as a mechanical stop. This stamping may also provide one or more retaining fingers 33. The retaining section II has ears 7 to enable the lugs 5 to be withdrawn by a suitable tool. The terminal section III is formed of harder material than the contact section I, and may have projections to bite into the cable. Arms 15 are crimped or soldered on to the bared end of the cable and arms 25 crimped on to the cable insulation. The contact section I has an extension 11 which underlies the retaining section II and is brazed or welded thereto, and also continues under the terminal section III and is then bent back to lie along the bottom of the inside of section III where it is held by distortion by the projections on section III when the cable is crimped in position.
