Abstract

Cellulose ethers are prepared by treating cellulose with the solution formed by dissolving a mono-, di-, or poly-halogeno ether in dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide, or dimethyl acetamide. The ether may be e.g. a mono-a -halogeno alkyl ether wherein the alkyl group is a straight chain, or a bis-halogenomethyl ether of formula Halogen-CH2-O-(CH2)n-CH2-O-CH2 -Halogen. wherein n=0-9, or with di-(chloromethyl) ether, a ,b -dichloro-a ,b -dimethoxy-ethane, and the corresponding bromo- and iodo-ethers. Alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl and aralkyl halogeno-alkyl ethers may also be used. The cellulose should have a nominal moisture content of a few per cent. The reaction may be carried out at room temperature. The reactant is normally used in molar excess over the cellulose. The reaction may proceed till the cellulose is about 30% substituted. Water-resistant or crease-resistant material results. The cellulose may be in the form of powder, cotton linters, cotton wool, or cotton cloth, e.g. poplin. The treatment is performed with or without shaking or stirring. After treatment the material may be passed through rollers which return excess solution to the bath. The solvent may be recovered. The material may be washed with fresh solvent and dried at atmospheric pressure or in vacuo. The degree of etherification may be determined by estimating formaldehyde formed by hydrolysis with HCl in acetonitrile under reflux.
