Abstract

A spool mounted for rotation on a spindle is associated with means whereby rotation of the spool causes bearing balls to travel over and deform an elastic surface, the resulting constant amount of work done per revolution of the spool as wire or thread is withdrawn therefrom determining the tension in the wire. By increasing the pressure of the balls on the elastic surface the tension in the withdrawn wire or thread increases. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the elastic surface is in the form of an annular disc 10 and the balls 8 are pressed against one flat side face of the disc. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the elastic surface is in the form of a pair of side-by-side rings 16, each of circular cross section, the balls 17 riding in the groove formed by the adjacent rings.
