1,034,862. Making composite strip; rolling. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. Jan. 15, 1963 [Jan. 15, 1962], No. 1856/63. Addition to 1,002,023. Headings B3A and B3M. A composite strip of aluminium 5 and stainless steel 7 is produced by feeding the strips from coils 1 and 2 to a cleaning station 11, heating one or both strips, and roll bonding the strips between rolls 20 and 22. The reduction of the aluminium component is from 30-60% while that of the stainless steel is less than 4%. The resulting strip can be heated, at 26 to increase the bond strength, and, if desired, can be formed by stainless steel strips bonded on each side of the aluminium. The cleaning may take the form of scratch brushing, pickling, or abrading, and the heating at 13 is disigned to provide an interfacial temperature of from 700-1000‹ F. at the pinch point of the rolls. Quenching of the strip during bonding is prevented by heating the rolls to between 180‹ and 500‹ F.
