Abstract
1,031,340. Winding filaments. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION Dec. 31, 1964 [Feb. 20, 1964], No. 53033/64. Heading B3E. A filament wire coiling machine includes a capstan for advancing a wire mandrel 14 at a predetermined rate, a rotatable coiling head including a bobbin 24 from which wire is unwound for coiling on the mandrel, and an electrodynamic brake which exerts a drag on the bobbin to create a tension in the filament wire during coiling. The coiling head which is mounted in bearings 8 in a support 6 is rotated by a belt-driven flywheel 15 and includes a tube 9, which drives both a shaft 13, for indicating the turns per inch of the filament wire, and a flange 16 carrying a frame 17. The frame (Fig. 1, not shown) supports a guide tube 18 for the wire and a heating wire 29. The bobbin is rotatably connected to and axially slidable on one end of an inner tube 22 which has a brake disc 33 at its opposite end. The disc is surrounded by a frame on which electromagnets are mounted, the supply to the electromagnets being adjustable to vary the braking effect on the disc. The power is fed through spring wires 45 which resist the braking torque and, by means of a calibrated annulus 39, rotatable through 180 degrees with the electromagnets, indicate the value of torque. Permanent magnets which are movable towards and away from the disc 33 may replace the electromagnets. The heater wire 29 for the filament wire is supplied with current by a generator (Fig. 5, not shown). Windings 57 on an armature 19 rotate with the coiling head between fixed polepieces 52 which are supplied with an adjustable excitation current. The current generated in the coils passes through the heater wire 29, and the excitation current can pass through an ammeter which is calibrated to indicate the heater wire current. A brake in the form of inwardly spring-urged shoes slows down the bobbin 24 when the coiling head drive is stopped, the shoes normally being held in an inoperative position by centrifugal force.
