Abstract

Silicon nitride, oxynitride or mixtures thereof are prepared by heating silicon, a silicon alloy or a silicon-providing compound in an atmosphere of nitrogen or at least one nitrogen-providing gas, at 1000-1900 DEG C. in the presence of more than 5% by weight of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) or a metal having atomic number 21-30, 39-48 or 57-79 (all inclusive). The catalyst metal may be used as such or as an alloy or compound, e.g. the oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, nitride, nitrite, nitrate, acetate or oxalate. The catalyst metal may also be alloyed with the silicon or present as the metal silicate. With silica or metal silicate, a reducing agent, e.g. carbon, is incorporated therewith, and the relative proportion of carbon determines the composition of the product in terms of silicon nitride and/or silicon oxynitride, or silicon carbide. Reaction may take place in a continuously rotated or vibrated furnace with the reaction mixture in particulate form. Alternatively, the silicon, silicon alloy or other silicon providing substance and the catalyst are initially heated with an organic binder, e.g. sugar, molasses, starch, pitch or tar, which also provides reducing carbon. The reaction mixture may include an inorganic substance which evolves gas on heating, e.g. ammonium nitrate, to increase its porosity.
