Abstract

1,027,609. Paper sticks for confectionery etc.; spills. CHESEBROUGH-POND'S Inc. Jan, 23, 1964 [Jan. 24, 1963], No. 2980/64. Headings A2B and A2M. A paper web 16, Fig. 2, 2# inch wide is fed by rollers 34, 35 Fig. 3, or 34a, 35a Fig. 26, to a cutting mechanism, the cut sections of paper are crimped by rollers 45, 47, then tightly rolled and compacted between a continuously rotating drum 10 and three stationary sector members 6, 7 and 8, and the paper sticks produced are taken off by a conveyer 70a. The crimped paper coils 18, spaced between 1¢ inch and 3 inches apart, depending on the speed of the cutting mechanism, are reduced in diameter from ¥ inch to # inch over sector 6 and down to # inch over sector 7. In sector 8 the coils are reduced to 1/10 inch diameter and retained at this diameter for the final one-half or one-third run of the sector 8 while moistening liquid (water) applied from a bath 9 by a sponge located between sectors 6 and 7, activates the starch carried by the paper to bind together the contiguous convolutions of the roll. The apparatus is described in considerable detail. The chief features are: (1) the paper web is fed from a supply roll 179 on an adjustable reel device, Figs. 24 and 25 (not shown)), first over idler rollers 207 and 208 and then back into contact with the supply roll as at 210 with the object of avoiding whipping and breakage of the paper tape, (2) the crimping rollers 45, 47 are rotated slightly faster than the feed rollers 34, 35, (3) the cut sections of paper are guided off the crimping roller 45 by fingers extending into grooves of the roller, (4) the sector members and the drum have abrasive surfaces e.g. of stone, sand paper or sprayed metal, (5) there is provision for varying the radial distance of sector member 6 from the drum, Fig. 13 (not shown), for varying the radial distance of sector member 7 from the drum and for quick retraction of the member for inspection, Figs. 16 to 18 (not shown), and for varying concentrically the distance of sector member 8 from the drum to control the size of the finished paper sticks, for quick retraction of the member and for tilting the member relative to the periphery of the drum. The cutting mechanism may consist of a vertically reciprocating, severing blade 14 provided with serrated or saw-tooth shaped teeth which are sloped with respect to the sides of the knife so that the tops of the teeth are sharply pointed. The knife holder 49 (Fig. 3) and knife 14 are reciprocated several hundred times per minute by means of a cam 56 rotating on a vertical shaft 59 and having a cam slot 57 in its circular face which actuates a follower roller 58 mounted on the rear of the upper portion of the knife holder 49. In an alternative construction, the severing mechanism comprises a rotating roller 14a, Fig. 26, carrying a punch member 14b consisting of a 1/16 inch steel plate having a punching face formed by equally spaced V-shaped cuts made alternately from the opposite sides of the member and at an angle of from about 25 to about 60 degrees to the surface of the member. Screws 226: enable the roller 14a to be adjusted vertically. Rotating roller 15a is covered with heavy paper such as kraft paper, through which the punch member 14b passes at each revolution.
