Abstract

1,019,538. Feeding webs. LEE WILSON ENGINEERING CO. Inc. Dec. 6, 1963 [Feb. 18, 1963], No. 48240/63. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for handling strip metal, e.g. steel, comprises a vertically disposed rotatable turntable 1 adapted to support a coil 3 of strip S thereon, vertical support and guide means 6 for guiding a length of strip adjacent the outside lap of a coil on the table to travel in one direction while maintaining the strip in a vertical plane, and a horizontal guide roll 9 having its axis extending horizontally in said one direction and out of vertical alignment with the turntable whereby the strip extending through the vertical support and the guide means and the horizontal guide roll will be twisted therebetween from a vertical into a horizontal plane. A strip S from an open coil 3 supported on a motordriven table 1 passes through a tension controlling device 4, pinch rolls 5, a pair of guides 6 and a pair of driven feed rolls 7, 8 to pass between a pair of adjustable edge guides 20, 21 and horizontal guide rolls 9, 10 disposed in a pit 12. Subsequently the strip passes over a series of idler rolls 16, between a second pair of guides 20, 21, around a driven tension drum 14 to be tightly coiled on a driven mandrel M of a coiler unit C, speed controlled by known means. The edge guides are mounted on brackets 20 slidable towards or away from each other along a bar 22 under the influence of a hand-operated right and left-handed screw 24 mounted in a fixed frame 23. The strip is freely twisted through 90 degrees and follows its natural path from rolls 7, 8 to 9, 10. The vertical distance from the coil supporting surface of table 1 to the lowest point of the roll 9 is not less than 1À5 and not more than 40 times the strip width. Known means may be used to regulate the turntable speed in relation to the loop size and additional guide rolls may be provided between the rolls 7, 8 and 9, 10. The apparatus may also be used to handle strip being coiled into an open coil either from a tight coil or a previous processing step in which case the strip will travel in the reverse direction to that shown.
