Abstract

Lubricant, metal-working, and hydraulic liquids comprise an ethoxylation product of a polyoxy-propylated or polyoxybutylated oligosaccharide, which may be used alone or dissolved in water, or in a hydrophilic organic solvent. The oligosaccharide may be sucrose, maltose, lactose, cellobiose, raffinose. The organic solvent may be a glycol, a ketone, or a polyether. Acid, neutral, or alkaline solution is effective. The examples describe the use of compounds from the reaction of 1 mole of sucrose with 80 of propylene oxide and (A) 48, (B) 70, and (C) 32 moles of ethylene oxide. B alone is used for lubricating bearings, A or B in water, or water/ethylene glycol, or diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, for turning metals, and A or C in water/diethylene glycol monoethyl ether as an hydraulic fluid.ALSO:Lubricant, metal-working and hydraulic liquids comprise an ethoxylation product of a polyoxypropylated or polyoxybutylated oligosaccharide, which may be used alone or dissolved in water or a hydrophilic organic solvent. The ethoxylated materials are obtained by treating an oligosaccharide, e.g. sucrose, maltose, lactose, cellobiose, raffinose, with sufficient propylene or butylene oxide to give waterinsoluble products having molecular weights of at least 3000, then further treating these with ethylene oxide. The organic solvent may be a glycol, a ketone, or a polyether. The materials are effective in acid, neutral or alkaline solution. The examples describe the use of compounds from the reaction of 1 mole of sucrose with 80 of propylene oxide and (A) 48, or (B) 70, or (C) 32 moles of ethylene oxide, alone for lubrication of bearings (B), or dissolved in water, or in water/ethylene glycol, or in diethylene glycol monoethyl ether for turning metals (A) and (B), or dissolved in water/diethylene glycol monoethyl ether as an hydraulic fluid (A) and (C).
