Abstract

An elongated tube constitutes a crimping chamber into and from the bottom and top of which filaments or yarns are fed by rolls against the back pressure of the mass of previously crimped filaments &c. and the crimped material is withdrawn by a winder separately driven from the rolls. The tube has an elongated slot in the zone of the mass, and an adjustable mechanical feeler carrying a mercury switch and extending through the slot to rest on top of the mass, Fig. 1 (not shown) or an adjustably mounted photo-electric cell on to which a light source projects a beam of light through the slot, Fig. 4 (not shown) responds to the level of the mass of crimped filaments &c. to control the drive to either the rolls or the winder so as to maintain the mass at a constant level. The crimped filaments &c. between tube and winder pass through a slub-catcher and a tension gate adjustably mounted on the tube.
