Abstract
Molten steel is enriched with nitrogen by blowing into the lower part of the covering slag layer either calcium cyanamide or a nitride which decomposes at high temperature to yield nitrogen, or a mixture of carbon with any of the above compounds, the addition being blown in a stream of nitrogen, or a gas inert to both metal and slag, or a mixture of nitrogen and such gas, under such conditions that nascent nitrogen is liberated by decomposition at the slag-metal interface. If calcium cyanamide is used, the calcium and carbon liberated serve to deoxidize the steel and slag, the resultant carbon monoxide having a beneficial stirring effect. When the addition agent is free of carbon it is desirable to agitate the bath independently, as by blowing with a further stream of nitrogen, a gas inert to both metal and slag, or a mixture thereof. The process may be carried out in an open-hearth or arc furnace, or a top-blown converter.
