Abstract

An orbital electronic device comprises, in an evacuated chamber, a doubled-walled cylindrical cathode (2) forming an annular chamber (24) through which a cryogenic fluid is pumped. A metal grill (4) is supported inside the anode and closed at each end by a respective biassed conductor plate (6,8) one of which, adjacent a work chamber, is a grill pervious to gas. A filament anode (10) is supported coaxially within the metal grill (4) in insulating supports in the end plates. A thermo-emissive element (12) e.g. tungsten, is located adjacent the lower plate and getter material (22) is provided on the anode (10). For use as an ionisation gauge the voltages VB and VA of the thermo-emissive filament and anode are in the ratio 0.04:1, the voltage of the end plates is negligible compared to the anode.
