Abstract

The shaft (1) rotates in the cylindrical housing (2) with a radial clearance varying from a maximum "F" to a minimum "f". Fluid is supplied from a source (7) via a pipe (8) to the point of maximum clearance "F". As the shaft rotates the pressure between shaft (1) and housing (2) increases with decreasing radial clearance so that a maximum pressure is reached, at the outlet (9) where the clearance is a minimum "f". The high pressure fluid is led away by the pipe (10). If fluid is required at intermediate pressure, holes are provided in the housing (2) at points such as (12) or (16). The housing (2) has an inwardly projecting rib fitting closely round the shaft (1) to prevent axial flow.
