Abstract

A large heat exchanger, esp. for high temps. and pressures, and partic. for heat transfer between the pri. and sec. circuits of nuclear reactors, comprises an outer heavy cylinder, closed at the ends by headpieces, each comprising an annular header with inlet or outlet for one fluid and having, within this annular header, a central axial access hole of large dia. leading into the body of the cylinder. The inner walls of the annular headers are tube plates, connected together by tubes extending generally axially through the cylinder and arranged in annuli concentrically with a wide central shaft between them. This central shaft, served by the large dia. access hole in the ends, is used for the installation of the tubes; the concentric rings of tubes are fixed by support rings joined together at regular intervals by radial webs welded to them. The central passage within the cylinder after the tubes have been installed, is plugged by a large cylindrical cartridge, of thin metal plate, which can be destroyed and subsequently be rebuilt when tubes are to be repaired or replaced.
