Abstract

A freshly extruded polypropylene fibre bundle (pref. at a temp. greater than 300 degrees C) is subjected to a transverse cooling gas jet (temp. below 4 degree C and velocity greater than 1.5 m/sec), and then collected together in stabilising tube before being deposited onto a conveyor as a spun-bonded yarn. Due to non-uniform cooling the filaments have a latent susceptibility to crimping which may be subsequently realised by drawing. The yarns may be used to form a non-woven fabric which is needled to produce a loop pile on one surface.
