Abstract

Prepared by reaction of resorcinol with benzenyl chloride at 70-120 degrees (pref. 95-105 degrees) in an acetic acid solution containing at least the stoichiometric quantity of water necessary for the reaction. In general the acetic acid represents 30-50% of the solvent, water 50-70%. The product is used in the plastics industry and elsewhere as a u.v. absorber. It is also useful as a starting material for syntheses.
