Abstract

The piston 14 of an hydraulic master cylinder 10 having circumferentially spaced fluid compensating passages 34 therein is packed by a resilient cup seal 22 formed in its face abutting the piston with an annular recess 40 aligned with the passages 34. The seal 22 is urged against the piston head 28 by a return spring 26 and the recess 40 is connected by recesses 42 with an annular groove 44 in the seal adjacent the sealing lip 32. An hydraulic reservoir communicates with the heat chamber 18 and also, through a compensating orifice 30, with the pressure chamber 16. When the piston is actuated, the orifice 30 is closed by the lip 32, and the recess 40 prevents extrusion of the seal into the passages 34.
