An apparatus for transporting tape of many different widths, comprising: a first vacuum chamber provided with openings and connected to a high vacuum source; an endless perforated drive belt, arranged in superposition with said openings of said first vacuum chamber, and intended to be in contact with the belts to be transported; a second vacuum chamber connected to said first vacuum chamber, to receive from it a reduced vacuum, and provided with a plurality of openings of which at least one is disposed out of contact with a tape of any width to be transported; a control valve that normally covers said latterly mentioned opening of said second vacuum chamber, and can be operated in the direction of moving away from or approaching this opening in response to the magnitude of the vacuum force existing in said second chamber; and means for moving said endless band, with the conveyor belts forced to go against it by the vacuum force of said first chamber, while the wider belts than said endless belt remain flat due to the effect of the existing vacuum force in said second chamber.
