Abstract
Traversable typewriter carriages are provided with a control device for releasably arresting a reciprocatory member 6 (see Division E2) mounted on the typewriter carriage in a predetermined position, the device including a magnetic circuit comprising a polarizing magnet 2 and a leaf spring 3, the spring having a first position B in which it completes the magnetic circuit and is held by the magnetic forces against the resilience of the spring and a second position C in which the magnetic circuit is broken and the magnetic forces are insufficient to overcome the resilience of the spring, the leaf spring being under a lower stress than in the first position and a control winding 4 on the magnetic circuit for reducing the magnetic flux and thereby releasing the leaf spring for movement by its resilience from the first to the second position, the spring being returnable to the first position by movement of the reciprocatory member. As shown, the polarizing magnet is a permanent magnet and the leaf spring has a uniform -crosssection over its whole length.
