Description

COMPLEX OF MODULAR ELEMENTS FOR FORMING DIVIDING WALLS
The present invention relates to a complex of modular elements for forming dividing walls.
Dividing walls are known comprising a plurality of plates and/or panels supported in their correct position by profiles fixed to the building structure (floors, walls, ceilings).
The market currently offers a large number of different solutions, able to satisfy the most diverse production, installation and utilization requirements. However one of the problems recurrent in this particular section is to obtain a dividing wall able to overcome installation difficulties, in the not infrequent case of imperfect parallelism between floor and ceiling. In this case if dimensional differences exist between the floor and ceiling due to imperfect horizontality, it is frequently the case that especially with large profile lengths the capacity of the ceiling profile to compensate dimensional variations may not be sufficient, with the result that it becomes necessary to create a discontinuity in the profile. This is preferably done at a natural discontinuity, such as a door, a corner, etc., but this is not always possible, in which case the solution is unsatisfactory.
Another problem currently present in known dividing wall formation systems is the fact that the support profiles for the panels and/or plates are generally of aluminium construction and have a shape such as to simultaneously provide a panel support function and a panel edge covering function. The result is that these profiles must be strong and sufficiently large, and involve a considerable use of metal with consequent high construction costs. An object of the present invention is therefore to provide a complex of modular elements for constructing dividing walls, which allows easy compensation of any constructional irregularities of the room in which the dividing wall is to be installed. Another object of the invention is to be able to install dividing walls without the need for highly specialized personnel.
Another object of the invention is to use profiles employing only a limited quantity of aluminium.
These and other objects which will be apparent from the ensuing description are attained, according to the invention, by a complex of modular elements for constructing a dividing wall as described in claim 1 .
A preferred embodiment of the present invention together with some variants thereof are further described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective partial view of a portion of profile for fixing to the floor a glass plate supported by an adjustable discontinuous element and two pieces of covering profile, one of which is applied to said discontinuous element and the other is separated therefrom, Figure 2 shows a piece of profile with the support element having its movable jaw open,
Figure 3 shows a portion of profile for fixing a glass plate to the ceiling without a covering profile and with the fork elements in different positions,
Figure 4 shows it in its assembled engagement condition, Figure 5 shows a portion of profile for fixing a glass plate to the floor with a discontinuous element and with covering profiles of a different type, Figure 6 shows it in its assembled condition,
Figure 7 is a cross-section therethrough taken at an adjustment screw,
Figure 8 shows a portion of floor fixing profile with a discontinuous element for supporting a wooden panel not yet fixed to said element, and Figure 9 shows it with two wooden panels fixed to said discontinuous element.
As can be seen from the figures, the complex of elements according to the invention is provided to form dividing walls, in which the infill panels can be glass plates 2 or wooden panels 2' covering the entire height. This complex comprises :
- profiles 4 for fixing plates 2 to the floor or panels 2' to the floor and ceiling,
- discontinuous elements 6 for adjustably supporting each plate 2 or each panel 2' at its lower edge,
- profiles 8 for fixing plates 2 to the ceiling or to a wall, - fork elements 10, housable in the profiles 8 to removably and discontinuously fix the plates 2.
Each profile 4 is essentially of U-shape, with a longitudinal cavity defined by a base 12 and two side flanges 14, and is preferably constructed of rigid plastic with coextruded lips of soft material. The elements 6 for adjustably supporting the plates 2 consist of two blocks with a parallelepiped base 16 housable as an exact fit within the longitudinal cavity of the U-shaped profiles 4.
An appendix extends upwards from this base 16 to form a fixed jaw 18 of a clamp for the plates 2. To said base 16 a member is fixed for adjustability supporting the plate 2. It comprises a slide 20 with longitudinal raised edges and with a screw 22 which extends downwards and is housed in a hole provided in the base 16. A nut 24 engages the screw 22 and rests with its lower face on the upper surface on the base 16, to determine, by the extent of its screwing onto the screw 22, the vertical position of the slide 20. In the variant shown in Figure 7, a threaded bush 26 is inserted into the hole provided in the base 16, to be engaged by a hollow screw 28 provided with opposing threads on its inner and outer cylindrical surfaces. In this manner, rotating the hollow screw 28 causes it both to move axially to the threaded bush 26 and to force the screw 22 to move axially to it. The range of height adjustment of the screw 22 and hence of the slide 20 can be doubled in this manner.
A movable jaw 30 is pivoted to the base 16 of the adjustment element 6, to be tightened towards the fixed jaw 18 by operating a screw 32.
To adapt the jaws 18 and 30 to different thicknesses of the plate 2, the jaws are provided with interchangeable inserts 34 of different thicknesses.
The base 16 of the element 6 is provided with a pair of holes of vertical axis, through which screws 36 can be inserted to fix the portion to the floor. Depending on requirements, the profile 4 can be fixed to the floor either independently of the element 6 or by said screws 36, which fix this to the floor. The form of the two jaws 18 and 30 is such that essentially inverted L- shaped covering profiles 38 with grooves along their longitudinal edges for housing seal gaskets 40, 42 can be snap-fitted over it from the outside. Of these gaskets, the upper gasket 40 rests directly on the plate 2. while the lower gasket 42 rests on the coextruded longitudinal lips of the profile 4. The profile 8 for fixing the plate 2 to the ceiling or to a wall is essentially of inverted U-shape and is asymmetrical, in the sense of presenting a longitudinal cavity facing downwards to define two flanges of different height.
More specifically, the flange 44 of greater height also forms the covering profile and comprises along its lower edge a groove for housing a gasket 46 cooperating directly with the plate 2. The flange 49 of lesser height has its free lower edge facing inwards to define with the base of the profile a groove 50 facing an identical groove provided in the flange 44.
Two pivots 52 of the fork elements 10 can be inserted into the two grooves 50, and constitute other essential components of the complex according to the invention.
In addition to comprising the two pivots 52 for securing it to the profile 8, each fork element 10 comprises two prongs 54 able to embrace the plate 2 from both sides.
Specifically, each fork element 10 can be made to rotate about the pivots 52 to pass from an inactive position, in which the prongs are parallel to the ceiling, to an active position in which the two prongs are perpendicular to the ceiling and engage the plate 2. This latter position is made stable by a prismatic element 56, which prevents the fork element 10 from exceeding its active position. That prong of each fork element 10 distant from the greater height flange 44 of the profile 8 is of such a shape as to enable it, when in its active position, to be snap-engaged by a covering profile 58, which completes the symmetry of the profile fixing the plate 2 to the ceiling.
To mount a glazed wall, of which the path has been previously defined, the profiles 4 and 8 are firstly fixed to the floor and ceiling respectively. The profile 8 is directly fixed to the ceiling, whereas the profile 4 can either be permanently fixed to the floor or be secured thereto provisionally, while awaiting to be finally fixed by the same screws 36 for fixing the adjustable support element 6.
The plates 2 are then positioned on the profile; each of these plates is rested with its lower edge on two slides 20 of two separate elements 6, its upper edge then being engaged by the fork elements 10 present in the upper profile 8 and made to suitably rotate about the respective pivots 52.
After a plate 2 has been positioned, it is adjusted into its correct position by the nuts 24 or the screws 28, the movable jaws 30 then being moved towards the fixed jaws 18; the next plate is then positioned using the same sequence.
On termination of this operation, the covering profiles 38 are applied to the jaws 18, 30 and the covering profile 58 to the fork elements 10, which in this manner are stabilized by the profile itself in their active condition. In the embodiment shown in Figures 5-7, the floor profile 4', which again presents a longitudinal cavity housing the adjustable support element 6, has one of the two upwardly extending side flanges arranged to also form the covering profile and the other flange comprising a longitudinal groove 60, in which the other covering profile 62 can be snap-engaged. In this case the clamping element for securing the plate 2 can be replaced by a fork element 10, of the same type as that used for the ceiling fixing profile 8.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 8 and 9, the adjustable support elements have a slightly different form, as they are provided for securing wooden panels 2'. In this case in the lower profile, the slide 20 is replaced by an inverted screw, engaged by a nut, for supporting a wide washer 20' acting as a support for the panel 2'. In this embodiment, the movable jaw 64 of the clamp is provided with holes for the passage of screws for directly fixing the jaws to the panel 2'. The same also applies to the upper profile, in which however the inverted screw is not used.
In the case of walls formed by panels 2', after securing the panels 2' to the lower and upper profiles, covering profiles 66 are again snap-fitted to the discontinuous elements 6. From the aforegoing it is apparent that the complex of elements according to the invention is extremely advantageous and in particular:
- it enables dividing walls to be very easily and quickly formed, even by non- specialized personnel,
- it enables the individual plates to be individually adjusted, - it enables dividing walls to be formed either with plates 2 or with panels 2',
- it uses a limited quantity of metal, which in some cases could be used only for the covering profiles.
