    Claims (22)

    1. A snowboard binding having
      a binding plate (13,13') adapted to receive a shoe;
      a back support (15,15') secured to the binding plate (13,13') at a rear portion thereof;
      and at least a strap element (19, 21,19', 65) or the like adapted to fit over the shoe and for attaching the shoe to the binding plate (13,13'), the strap (19, 21,19', 65) being secured to a pivotable element (17,17'), which is pivotably coupled to the binding plate (13,13') at a forward portion thereof; and
      positioning means located on each side of the binding for positioning the pivotable element (17,17');
      characterized in that
      the positioning means are formed such that the pivotable element (17,17') can be positioned in selected pivoted positions.
    2. The binding of claim 1, wherein a forward and a rear strap element (19,19') and (21,65) are provided and wherein all said strap elements (19, 21;19',65) are secured to the pivotable element (17,17').
    3. The binding of claim 1 or 2, wherein the pivotable element (17, 17') includes a shoe support surface.
    4. The binding according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the pivotable element (17) comprises two arms (25), and at least a cross rib connecting said arms together.
    5. The binding according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the binding plate (13,13') comprises two side walls or jaws (43, 43'), which form a lateral abutment for the pivotable element (17, 17') in the lower position.
    6. The binding according to claim 4 or 5, wherein the cross rib (23) can engage between said jaws (43).
    7. The binding according to any of claims 4 to 6, wherein said rib (23) in the lower position is flush with the upper surface of the binding plate (13,13').

    10. The binding according to any of claims 1 to 9, wherein said back support (15,15') is pivotable.
    11. The binding according to any of claims 1 to 10, wherein the back support (15,15'), at least at a lower region thereof, is surrounded by a heel part (29); and wherein the position of the heel part (29) and of the back support (15,15') are independently adjustably secured to the binding plate (13).
    12. The binding according to any of claims 1 to 11, wherein the arms (61) of the pivotable element (17') are connected together by connecting bail (63).
    13. The binding of claim 12, wherein said bail (63) and the strap (65) are flexibly coupled to the arms (61).
    14. The binding of claim 12 or 13, wherein both the bail (63) and said one strap (65) are pivotably connected to the arms (61).
    15. The binding according to any of claims 1 to 14, wherein said means for securely positioning the pivotable element (17') comprise buckles (67, 81) and toothed straps (71, 73) operatively associated with said buckles (67, 81), said means coupling the pivotable element (17') on both sides to the binding plate (13').
    16. The binding of claim 15, wherein said buckles comprise ratchet buckles (67,81) being secured to the bail (63); and the toothed straps (71, 73) are mounted to the binding plate (13).
    17. The binding of claim 1, wherein said positioning means comprise snap locks (31) having a bolt (35); and
      the arms (25) are formed with at least one or a plurality of recesses (33) shaped for operative engagement with said bolts.
    18. The binding of claim 15 or 16, wherein the end portions of said straps (71, 73) extend in a space between said bail (63) and the strap element (65), the bail (63) having an opening (113) above the buckle (67) through which the end portions of said straps extend.
    19. The binding according to any of claims 15,16 or 18, wherein the end portions of said straps include means, for instance stops (125, 127), to prevent unintended removal of the straps from the buckles (67, 81).
    20. The binding according to any of claims 15 to 19, wherein the buckles (67,81) or bolt (35) are connected by a strap or cable to permit simultaneous opening by pulling the strap (89) or cable.
    21. The binding of claim 20, wherein said strap (89) or cable includes a handle portion or a holding loop portion (124).
    22. The binding of claim 20 or 21, wherein said strap (89) or cable extend through two holes (119) provided at a distance from the apex of the bail (63);
      and the cable or strap (89) extending through the openings (113) towards operating levers (85).
