Description

The present invention relates to luggage provided with wheels.

Two main rolling systems are known for such baggage or suitcases. In a first system, two wheels are provided arranged at one end of the bottom of the luggage and a handle is articulated in the vicinity of the opposite corner of the luggage, for lifting it, pulling it and guiding it on its two wheels. In the second system, four wheels are provided, arranged in pairs at each end of the bag. In the latter system, a strap and a handle are used to roll the suitcase on its four wheels.

A problem which arises with baggage provided with four wheels results from the fact that these wheels are free, that is to say that they allow baggage to roll freely on the ground. As a result, a four-wheeled suitcase can roll freely on a ramp or an inclined conveyor. Depending on the slope of the conveyor or the ramp and the distance traveled, the bag can reach relatively high speeds, thus risking damage to the bag itself, its contents or to other objects and even people, when 'a shock.

The object of this invention is therefore to improve such luggage provided with rolling elements, so as to be able to brake it and prevent it from rolling down slopes.

The subject of the invention is therefore a baggage provided with rolling elements allowing this baggage to move on a horizontal or inclined surface, comprising traction means for dragging or pushing the baggage on its wheels, at least one carrying member , as well as means to neutralize selectively at least some of said rolling elements when it is desired to prevent an uncontrolled rolling movement, characterized in that it comprises means for bringing the neutralization means into the active position when the luggage is lifted independently of the traction member and to bring them into the inactive position when the traction device is used to move the luggage.

The means for neutralizing the wheels preferably comprise a lug whose dimension is such that when this lug is in a first position, it prevents the wheels from coming into contact with the surface on which the luggage rests, while when this lug occupies a second position, the wheels can roll on the ground. As will be seen in the preferred embodiment, the traction means comprise a belt and means for selectively storing this belt in the form of a loop. The means for neutralizing the wheels may comprise a link connected to these means for storing the belt. The link cooperates with the tab so that when traction is exerted on the belt, the link allows the tab to fold against the wall of the luggage. When the end of the luggage is lifted from the ground, for example by using the carrying handle, the lug is elastically stressed so as to extend beyond the wheels, thus preventing the latter from coming into contact with the ground until that the storage means of the belt are again actuated.

A pair of front wheels 12 is disposed on the side of the suitcase 10 where there is also a pull handle 16. A second pair of wheels 14 is disposed at the rear part of the suitcase 10, opposite to that where said handle 16 is located .

The suitcase 10 naturally includes a carrying handle 18 of known construction. This suitcase 10 also has a peripheral groove 11 which aesthetically divides this suitcase into two parts smaller, while delimiting a cavity in which can be received the pull handle 16, its deployable belt which will be described in more detail below, as well as the braking device according to the invention. The suitcase can also be divided by this groove 11 into a half-shell constituting the bottom and a half-shell constituting the cover, the cover being articulated on the bottom by means of hinges 15. In general, the front wheels 12 are mounted so that you can rotate around a vertical axis. In this way, the suitcase 10 can make turns when it is dragged by the handle 16.

In the device envisaged, a belt 20, the upper end of which is connected to the handle 16, is stored in the form of a loop in a casing 17, also arranged in the peripheral groove 11.

Le coulisseau 24 est guidé par un téton fixe 24a.FIG. 2 represents the lower front corner of the suitcase 10, a part of the casing 17 being cut away to show an intermediate portion of the traction belt 20, which passes around a movable loop 22 constituting a return member for the belt 20 The loop 22 is connected by a slide 24, a spring 26 and a cable 28 to the braking mechanism 30. The cable 28 is preferably of the sheath type to allow it to move easily in the groove 11, around the front corner. lower of the bag 10. The slide 24 is guided by a fixed stud 24 a .

The braking mechanism 30 comprises a base 32 which is fixed by screws or rivets in the groove 11. The base delimits two slots 34 in which a rod (or axis) 36 can both pivot and move in translation. Rod 36 also carries the upper end of a support rod 38 and one end of a shuttle 44 (Figure 3).

The base rotatably supports a second rod or axis 40 which is itself fixed to a first end of a tab 42 forming a stand intended to come into contact with the ground. The cable 28 is fixed to the shuttle 44 which can move along the base 32 for a short distance under the effect of the movement of the cable 28 and of the forces exerted on the lower end of the tab 42. shuttle 44 carries at one end the rod 36 and the support rod 38. The sheath of the cable 28 is in abutment, on the one hand, against a sheath stop 29 fixed in the bottom of the groove 11 and on the other hand, against lug 42 or against another sheath stop.

At the lower end of the link 38 is provided a small torsion spring 48. This spring exerts a certain force which tends to move the upper end of the link 38 to the right, along the slot 34, looking at the figures. The force exerted by this spring 48 can be easily overcome by the movement of the shuttle 44 under the effect of an upward displacement of the slide 24, transmitted by the cable 28.

The operation of the braking device 30 will be explained in more detail with reference to FIGS. 4A to 4C. FIG. 4A shows the braking device 30 in what can be considered to be its normal position, the lug 42 being in contact with the ground, while the wheels are also in contact with the ground. In this position, the lug 42 is stressed only by the elastic force exerted by the torsion spring 48. This lug thus has only a negligible braking effect and the suitcase 10 can be move freely on all four wheels. Slight inequalities in the ground surface may be that the lug 42 is rotated around the second shaft or the second axis 40. The rod 36 moves freely along the central part 34 has cam surfaces 34 formed by the lights. This smooth part of the lights 34 does not prevent this slight displacement.

On the other hand, when a braking effect is desired, the user lifts the suitcase 10 slightly from the ground by means of the carrying handle 18. This allows the torsion spring 48 to bring the rod 36 in its extreme position towards the straight in the lights 34. As can be seen in FIG. 4b, this causes the rod 36 to pass through a part 34b of the cam surface of the lights 34 which is oriented vertically. When the suitcase 10 is rested on the ground, the end of the lug 42 is kept below the lower surface of the front wheels 12, keeping them away from the ground and consequently neutralizing them. The rod 36 is locked in the end portion 34 b of the lights 34. In this position of the device, the bag is prevented from rolling on the ground. Preferably, however, the arrangement is such that if the user sits on the luggage, the lug 42 yields sufficiently resiliently so that the wheels come to rest again on the ground and support the weight of the user.

When the user of the bag wishes to return to a free rolling position, for example in order to be able to pull the bag by means of the handle 16, it suffices for him to pull the strap 20, by exerting traction on the handle 16. This causes moving the slide 24 upwards. The cable 28 is actuated and the shuttle 44 is moved towards the left looking at Figure 3. This releases the rod 36 from its locked position in the slots 34 and causes the withdrawal of the tab 42 which is thus remote from the ground and penetrates at least partly in the groove 11 (Figure 4G). Suitcase 10 can then be used as if no braking mechanism existed. It can move freely on its front 12 and rear 14 wheels.

When the pull handle is released, the cable 28 is no longer under tension and the tab 42 can return to its position shown in FIG. 4A. No braking force is exerted in this position. It is only when the wheels 12 are raised, for example by means of the handle 18, that the lug 42 can descend sufficiently low towards the ground to allow the rod 36 carried by the link 38, to fall into the branch 34 b for locking the lights 34. Consequently, the pull handle 16, whether constituted by a simple strap or by the deployable strap according to the embodiment shown, can be used in conjunction with the carrying handle 18 to actuate the braking device and bring it to the active or inactive position.

Cependant lorsque le couvercle est ouvert, le ressort 58 sollicite le plongeur 50 vers le haut au-delà de l'ouverture 54.The movement of the shuttle 44 can also be controlled, depending on whether the cover of the case is open or closed. In the embodiment shown, in which the braking mechanism is received in the peripheral groove 11, it is important that the tab 42 does not interfere with the opening of the bag. For this purpose, a plunger 50 is provided to be able to move laterally between a first position in which it projects a certain distance through an opening 54 formed in the side wall of the base 32, and a second position in which it is approximately level with the opening 54. A spring 58 is provided in the hollow lower end of the plunger 50, to urge this plunger towards its first position. A finger 52 forming a cam touch protrudes laterally from the side of the plunger 50, this finger normally being able to come into contact with an inclined cam surface 46 delimited by the edge of an orifice formed in the underside of the shuttle 44. The upper end of the plunger 50 comes into contact with the upper surface of the groove 11 when the cover is closed. However, when the cover is open, the spring 58 biases the plunger 50 upwards beyond the opening 54.

Normally, the upper end of the plunger 50 is pushed downwards by coming into contact with one side of the groove 11, carried by the suitcase cover. This moves the finger 52 away from the inclined cam surface 46 provided on the shuttle 44. However, when the cover of the case is opened by articulation around the hinges 15, the plunger moves upward through the orifice 54. The finger 52 can move under the action of the spring 58 and comes into contact with the inclined surface of the cam 46 to move the shuttle 44 and its axis 36 forward in the slots 34. This has the effect retract the tab 42 and bring it back into the groove 11. In this way, the tab 42 is brought into a position such that it does not hamper the opening of the suitcase 10, which would be the case if it could remain in its deployed position.

In this mechanism, the axis of rotation of the tab 42 a is offset by 90 ° relative to that shown in the first embodiment. The cam surfaces of the lights 34 are replaced by a simple crossing of neutral point of the tab 42 a . A spring 48 a normally maintains the tab 42 a in a position located beyond the neutral position. A cable 28 a is fixed to the free end of a lever arm 44 a which is fixed to the articulation axis integral with the lug 42 a and which therefore determines the position of this lug. When the belt is pulled, as in the first embodiment described, the movement of this belt is transmitted by the cable 28 a . However, in this embodiment, this displacement is transformed into a rotational force which causes the braking tab to tilt, against the less significant force exerted by the spring 48 a .

La valise peut alors se déplacer librement sur ses quatre roues comme un bagage classique.FIG. 6A represents the mechanism in the position for which, under the effect of the spring 48 a , the tab 42 a is slightly in contact with the ground and practically does not cause any braking force. In FIG. 6B, the force exerted by the spring 48 a brings the tab 42 a into its deployed position, after the bag has been slightly raised by means of the carrying handle. The weight of the bag 10 effectively blocks the lug 42 has in its position in contact with the ground, beyond the dead center position, thereby neutralizing the wheels 12 which are no longer in contact with the ground. By exerting traction on the belt, as explained in connection with the first embodiment, traction is caused on the cable 28 a and this tensile force is transformed by action on the lever arm 44 a into a rotational force greater than the force exerted by the spring 48 a . In this way, by lifting at least the end of the bag by means of the traction belt, the tab 42 a can rotate under the effect of the force exerted by the lever 44 a . This completely clears (the tab 42 has ground as shown in FIG. 6C. The suitcase can then move freely on its four wheels like conventional luggage.

As in the first embodiment described, that of Figure 5 also includes means for preventing the braking mechanism from interfering with the opening of the cover. To this end, the axis of the hinge 15 a connecting the cover to the bottom of the bag is disposed approximately at the point of articulation of the tab 42 a . Since the latter rotates about an axis parallel to the axis of the hinges of the bag, the cover simply comes into contact with the upper part of the tab 42 a when it is in the open position. The opening force of the cover is greater than the force exerted by the spring 48 a and consequently causes the tab to tilt to move it away from the cover.

Cet organe 122a est, lui-aussi, sollicité par un ressort 127.In the variant of FIG. 7, the link and actuation mechanism between the traction handle and the braking means 150 are arranged inside the luggage, in a housing 117. In addition, the strap 120 has three strands which pass over two members of reference, one not visible in the drawing, corresponding to the member 22, and the other designated by the reference 122 a . This member 122 a is also biased by a spring 127.

Un ressort à lame 208 sollicite la patte 205 vers sa position active, cette patte portant un patin 205a.The variant shown in FIG. 8 corresponds to a simplified version of the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 4. We find there: a base 201 delimiting two lights 202; a link 203 comprising two coaxial fingers 204, made of material, received in the slots 202; and a tab 205 forming a stand articulated on the base around an axis 206 and on the link 203 around an axis 207. The axis of the fingers 204 and the axes 206, 207 are parallel. A leaf spring 208 biases the tab 205 towards its active position, this tab carrying a pad 205 a .

Le câble d'actionnement 209 est accroché sur la biellette 203, au voisinage de l'axe formé par les doigts 204.The actuation cable 209 is hung on the link 203, in the vicinity of the axis formed by the fingers 204.

Le fonctionnement du dispositif de freinage est analogue à celui décrit à propos du mode de réalisation des Fig. 1 à 4.The operation of the braking device is similar to that described in connection with the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 4.

There is shown in Figs. 9 to 11 a variant of the control means 210 which make it possible to bring the brake lug into the retracted position when the cover is opened, such means being used with the embodiment of FIG. 8 braking means.

These means are arranged in the vicinity of the point of attachment between the traction belt 211 and the actuating cable 209. The belt 211 acts on a slide 212 housed in a housing 213, this housing also receiving two levers 214 and 215 mounted rotatable around the same axis 214 a .

The lever 214 has one end which projects into the slide 212 and on which the end of the actuation cable 209 is fixed.

Un ressort 218 sollicite le levier 215 vers la position représentée sur la Fig. 10.The lever 215 has a rim 216 which can come to bear against the lever 214 and a part 217 which projects out of the housing 213 to come into the path of a part of the luggage cover (not shown). A spring 218 biases the lever 215 towards the position shown in FIG. 10.

The operation of this mechanism is as follows: in the closed position of the cover, the lever 215 occupies the position of FIG. 10 and the lever 214 is subjected to the actions of the cable 209 and the belt 211, allowing the normal operation of the device.

When the cover is open, the lever 215 switches to its position in FIG. 9 under the action of the spring 218, and acts on the lever 214 to exert traction on the cable 209 and bring the brake lug to the retracted position.

The expression traction member must be understood as also designating a member used to move the baggage by pushing and the belt 20 can be replaced by any equivalent link.
