Abstract

Electrical connector 2 to electrically connect contact surfaces 74 on a daughter plate 18 with contact surfaces 46 on a mother plate 34. The connector 2 has contacts 36 positioned in it and the connector 2 has legs 38 which extend from the connector 2 and make an electrical connection with the contact areas 46 of the mother plate 34. The daughter plate 18 is inserted into the connector 2 with reduced or no insertion force and angled into its operating position. When this angling takes place the contact projections 60, 72 on the contacts 36 engage with the contact surfaces 74 of the daughter plate 18. The angling is transmitted to a positive wiping effect between the contact projections 60, 72 and the contact surfaces 74 in order to ensure that a positive electrical connection is made. The flexible nature of the contacts 36 ensures that this wiping effect takes place with normal force. The design and the characteristics, that is the low spring value of the sprung part 68, mean that the contacts 36 can be used many times without becoming permanently deformed and thereby ensure that a positive electrical contact is made at each use. In order to prevent the daughter plate 18 from buckling and bending in use, a support 88 is arranged which interacts with the plate 18. The support 88 does not just hold the plate 18 in the correct position but also acts as a shield if necessary. <IMAGE>
