Abstract
Active white fillers for organic polymeric compsns. are produced by impregnating a pulverulent inorganic material with a substance capable of forming a polyester, polyamide, polyurethane or polyurea by reaction with another substance which is subsequently brought into contact with the impregnated powder in a fluidised bed or in an inert liquid. Inorganic fillers activated by this method can be used as reinforcing agents for polymers (when added in an amt. of 5-40 wt. %), or as hardeners for crosslinking polymers (1-5 wt. %), or as polymer-crystallisation accelerators (0.1-1 wt. %). White inorganic fillers, which reduce the strength of polymeric materials when introduced without any pretreatment, can be activated by the above process and used as reinforcing agents. Inorganic pulverulent materials which can be activated by this process include precipitated silicic acid, kaolin, alumina gels, aluminium silicates, TiO2, ZnO, CaCO3, precipitated BaSO4, MgCO3, Al(OH)3; the particle size should be below 0.1 mm. The activation is pref. carried out with diols dicarboxylic acids, diesters diamines, diisocyanates or bis-phenols.
