Abstract

A utility tool (200) comprising a body (206), a removable blade cartridge (210), and a slidable knife blade (216) within the cartridge (210). A first tool (202) is attachable to the body and has a second tool (204) couplable thereto. A knife switch (212) is coupled to the blade (216).

Claims (69)

1. A utility tool comprising:
a. a body having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end and the second end are positioned on opposite ends of the body;
b. a removable blade cartridge positioned within the body, wherein a knife blade within the removable blade cartridge is configured to slidably extend out from the first end; and c. a first tool configured to be selectively coupled to one of either the first end and the second end of the body.
2. The utility tool according to claim 1 wherein the removable blade cartridge further comprises a knife switch coupled to the knife blade, wherein the knife switch allows the knife blade to slidably move between an extended position and a retracted position with respect to the body.
3. The utility tool according to claim 2 wherein the knife switch is able to move the knife blade from the retracted position to the extended position only when the blade cartridge is engaged within the body.
4. The utility tool according to claim 2 further comprising a spring mechanism coupled to the knife switch for biasing the knife blade to the retracted position.
5. The utility tool according to claim 1 further comprising a second tool configured to be selectively coupled to the first tool.
6. The utility tool according to claim 5 wherein the second tool is configured to be selectively coupled to one of either the first end and the second end of the body.
7. The utility cool according to claim 1 wherein the first fool is a writing instrument.
8. The utility tool according to claim 5 wherein the second tool is a writing instrument.
9. The utility tool according to claim 5 wherein the second tool is a measuring instrument.
10. The utility tool according to claim 9 wherein the measuring instrument is one of the group consisting of: a retractable tape measure, level, compass and bar code scanner.
11. The utility tool according to claim 5 wherein the second tool is an illuminating instrument.
12. The utility tool according to claim 1. wherein the body includes a blade cartridge bay for receiving the removable blade cartridge.
13. The utility tool according to claim 12 wherein the blade cartridge includes a leaf member for engaging and disengaging the blade cartridge from the blade cartridge bay by a snap fit.
14. The utility tool according to claim 1 wherein blade cartridge further comprises:
a. a first blade member; and b. a second blade member in communication and positioned substantially parallel to the first blade member, wherein a recess slot is located between the first blade member and the second blade member for housing the knife blade, the blade cartridge including a thin film of material configured over a knife slot in communication with the recess slot such that the knife blade pierces the thin film when moving initially from the retracted position to the extended position.
15. The utility tool according to claim 1 further comprising a clip coupled to the body.
16. A utility tool comprising:
a. a body having a substantially cylindrical shape, wherein the body includes a first end and a second end positioned opposite from one another, the body including a blade cartridge bay within:
b. a removable blade cartridge coupled to the blade cartridge bay, wherein the blade cartridge contains a knife blade configured to slidably extend out the first end; and c. a first tool configured to be selectively coupled to one of either the first end and the second end.
17. The utility tool according to claim 16 wherein the blade cartridge includes a knife switch coupled to the knife blade, wherein the knife switch automatically retracts the knife blade within the body when not in use.
18. The utility tool according to claim 16 further comprising a second tool configured to be coupled to the first tool.
19. The utility tool according to claim 18 wherein the second tool is configured to selectively coupled to one of either the first end and the second end.
20. The utility tool according to claim 16 wherein the first tool is a writing instrument.
21. The utility tool according to claim 18 wherein the second tool is a measuring device.
22. The utility tool according to claim 18 wherein the second tool is a writing instrument.
23. The utility tool according to claim 21 wherein the measuring instrument is one of the group consisting of: a retractable tape measure, level, compass and bar code scanner.
24. The utility tool according to claim 18 wherein the second tool is an illuminating device.
25. A removable blade cartridge configured to fit within a corresponding blade cartridge bay, the blade cartridge comprising:
a. a blade cartridge body having a recess slot within and a knife slot in communication with the recess slot;
b. a knife blade positionable within the recess and configured to slidably move between an open position and a closed position; and c. a guide assembly coupled with the knife blade, wherein the guide assembly drives the knife blade between the closed position and the open position.
26. The removable blade cartridge according to claim 25 further comprising a leaf member for engaging and disengaging the blade cartridge to the blade cartridge bay.
27. The removable blade cartridge according to claim 25 wherein the blade cartridge body further comprises:
a. a first blade member; and b. a second blade member in communication and positioned substantially parallel to the first blade member, wherein the recess slot is located between the first blade member and the second blade member, the blade cartridge body including a thin film of material configured over the knife slot such that the knife blade pierces the thin film when moving initially from the closed position to the open position.
28. The utility tool according to claim 16 wherein the blade cartridge bay further comprises a guide spring, wherein the guide spring urges the knife blade to retract to the closed position.
29. The removable blade cartridge according to claim 25 wherein the knife blade is moveable between the closed position to the open position only when the blade cartridge is engaged within the blade cartridge bay.
30. The removable blade cartridge according to claim 29 further comprising a safety spring for applying a first force to the guide assembly when the blade cartridge is disengaged from the blade cartridge bay, wherein the knife blade is prevented from moving when the first force is applied to the guide assembly.
31. The utility tool according to claim 28 wherein the guide spring applies an activating force to the guide assembly, wherein the knife blade is allowed to move between the closed position and the open position when the activating force is applied.
32. The removable blade cartridge according to claim 25 wherein the guide assembly further comprises a knife switch coupled to the knife blade.
33. A removable blade cartridge comprising:
a. means for housing a knife blade, wherein the knife blade is prevented from moving between a first position and a second position;
b. means for driving the knife blade between the first and second position, wherein the knife blade is capable of moving when the driving means is activated; and c. means for activating the driving means, wherein said driving means is activated when said activating means applies a force to said driving means.
34. A utility tool comprising:
a. body having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end and the second end are positioned on opposite ends of the body;
b. a cutting tool positioned within the body, wherein the cutting tool is configured to slidably extend out from the first end; and c. a cartridge unit coupled to the body, wherein the cartridge unit includes a first tool, and further wherein the cartridge unit is moveable between a first position and a second position, wherein the first tool extends out from the second end when the cartridge unit is in the first position.
35. The utility tool according to claim 34 further comprising a knife switch coupled to the cutting tool, wherein the knife switch allows the cutting tool to slidably move between an extended position and a retracted position.
36. The utility tool according to clam 35 further comprising a spring mechanism coupled to the knife switch for biasing the cutting tool to the retracted position.
37. The utility tool according to claim 34 wherein the cartridge unit further comprises a second tool which extends out from the second end when the cartridge unit is in the second position.
38. The utility tool according to claim 34 wherein the first tool is a writing instrument.
39. The utility tool according to claim 37 wherein the second tool is a measuring instrument.
40. The utility tool according to claim 39 wherein the measuring instrument is one of the group consisting of: a retractable tape measure, level, compass and bar code scanner.
41. The utility tool according to claim 37 further comprising a container integrally formed within the utility tool, the container for housing a selective one of the first tool and the second tool.
42. The utility tool according to claim 34 wherein the body includes an integrally positioned track within which the cartridge unit is moveable.
43. The utility tool according to claim 37 wherein the second tool is an illuminating instrument.
44. A utility tool comprising:
a. a body;
b, a first housing coupled to the body, wherein the first housing contains a cutting tool, the cutting tool configured to slidably extend out from the first housing;
and c. a second housing coupled to the body, the second housing having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end and the second end are positioned opposite from one another, the second housing configured to rotate between a first position and a second position, further wherein the first end is positioned within the body in the first position and the first end is positioned away from the body in the second position.
45. The utility tool according to claim 44 further comprising a knife switch coupled to the cutting tool, wherein the knife switch automatically retracts the cutting tool within the utility tool when not in use.
46. The utility tool according to claim 44 wherein the second housing further comprises a first tool extending from the first end.
47. The utility tool according to claim 46 wherein the second housing further comprises a second tool extending from the second end.
48. The utility tool according to claim 46 wherein the first tool is a writing instrument.
49. The utility tool according to claim 47 wherein the second tool is a measuring device.
50. The utility tool according to claim 49 wherein the measuring instrument is one of the group consisting of: a retractable tape measure, level, compass and bar code scanner.
51. The utility tool according to claim 46 wherein the second tool is an illuminating device.
52. The utility tool according to claim 44 further comprising a container integrally formed within the utility tool, the container for housing a selective one of the ends of the second housing positioned within the utility tool.
53. The utility tool according to claim 44 further comprising a track integrally formed within the body, wherein the second housing is coupled to the track and moveable along the track.
54. A cutting cool having a first end and a second end positioned opposite from one another, the cutting tool comprising a cartridge unit positionable within the cutting tool, the cartridge unit having a third end and a fourth end, wherein the third end and the fourth end are configured opposite from one another, the cartridge unit rotatable about an axis, wherein the third end is positioned within the cutting tool when the fourth end is proximal to the first end, and further wherein the fourth end is positioned within the cutting tool when the third end is proximal to the first end.
55. The cutting tool according to claim 54 further comprising a knife configured to extend out from the second end of the cutting tool.
56. The cutting tool according to claim 55 further comprising a knife switch coupled to the knife, wherein the knife switch automatically retracts the knife within the cutting tool when not in use.
57. The cutting tool according to claim 54 wherein the cartridge unit further comprises a writing instrument extending from the third end.
58. The cutting tool according to claim 54 wherein the cartridge unit further comprises a measuring instrument extending from the fourth end.
59. The utility tool according to claim 58 wherein the measuring instrument is one of the group consisting of: a retractable tape measure, level, compass and bar code scanner.
60. The cutting tool according to claim 57 wherein the writing instrument is a pen.
61. The cutting tool according to claim 57 wherein the writing instrument is a highlighting marker.
62. The cutting tool according to claim 54 further comprising a container integrally formed within the cutting tool, the container for housing the end of the cartridge unit positioned within the cutting tool.
63. The cutting tool according to claim 54 further comprising a track integrally formed within the body, wherein the cartridge unit is coupled to the track and moveable along the track.
64. A multi-tasking utility tool comprising:
a. a body;
b. a knife compartment coupled to the body, wherein the knife compartment contains a cutting tool, the cutting tool configured to slidably extend out from the knife compartment; and c. a cartridge unit coupled to the body, the cartridge unit having a first writing instrument and a second writing instrument, wherein the first writing instrument and the second writing instrument are positioned opposite from one another, the cartridge unit rotatable between a first position and a second position, further wherein the first writing instrument is positioned within the body in the first position and extends away from the body in the second position.
65. The utility tool according to claim 64 further comprising a knife switch coupled to the cutting tool, wherein the knife switch automatically retracts the cutting tool within the knife compartment when not in use.
66. The utility tool according to claim 64 wherein the first writing instrument is a pen.
67. The utility tool according to claim 64 wherein the second writing instrument is a highlighting marker.
68. The utility tool according to claim 64 further comprising a container integrally formed within the body, the container for housing one of the ends of the cartridge unit when positioned within the body.
69. The utility tool according to claim 64 having a track integrally formed within the body, wherein the cartridge unit is coupled to the track and moveable along the track.
