Description

This invention relates to mattresses and more particularly to a mattress having raised lateral portions which serve to confine a person who is lying on the mattress to its central area.
It is often useful to confine a person who is lying on a mattress to the central area. Babies, for example, may become entangled in the bars at the sides of a crib when they are able to move freely on the mattress. Babies may also roll over against the solid side walls of a conventional bassinet and suffocate or they may roll over onto their stomachs where, it is thought, they may be more vulnerable to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Adults, too, may have to be confined to the central area of a mattress. Adults who are restless while they are asleep or who are comatose may roll off a mattress and fall onto a floor and injure themselves unless they are confined to the central area of the mattress.
There are various ways which are known for confining a person to the central area.
Pillows and blankets are often placed along the sides of a mattress for this propose. There are also mattress which are specially designed to confine a person to its central area. U.S. patent no.
6,023,802 to King, for example, describes a sleeper or mattress having raised portions adjacent to its side edges. The raised portions prevent a person on the mattress from rolling over to the sides of the mattress.
The known means for confining a person to the central area have many shortcomings Pillows and blankets may fall off the mattress where the bed lacks means such as side walls or bars for preventing this. If the bed has such means, the person, especially a baby, may roll over face-down onto the pillows and blankets or the pillows or blankets may fall onto the baby. In either case, the baby may be suffocated by the pillows or blankets.
Specially designed mattresses such as that described in U.S. patent no.
6,023,802 to King have other shortcomings. The raised portion of the King mattress has sharp edges at the intersection of the raised portions and the central area of the mattress.
There are also sharp edges at the upper areas of the raised portions. The edges may injure a person who is thrashing on the mattress. Babies are particularly susceptible to such injury. In addition the inside walls of the raised portions of the King mattress extend vertically upward and present the same hazard to a baby as the solid side wall of a bassinet. The danger is that a baby may roll against the inside wall of the King mattress and suffocate.
I have invented a mattress which confines a person who is lying on it to its central area.
The mattress has none of the short-comings of pillows and blankets for confining a person to the central area nor does it have the scarp edges or vertical inside walls of the King mattress.
Briefly, my mattress has upwardly extending walls at the front, rear and two sides thereof and a top wall which defines the upper surface of the mattress. The top wall has a raised portion adjacent to each side wall and a central portion disposed between the raised portions. Each raised portion has an inner surface which commences at the central portion and slopes smoothly upwardly and outwardly and merges smoothly with an upper surface. The upper surface extends smoothly further outward and terminates at the side wall to which such raised portion is adjacent.
The inner upper surfaces are smooth and free of sharp edges.
The mattress of my invention is described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing. In the drawing, the mattress, generally 10 has upwardly extending walls at the front 12, rear 14 and two sides 16, 18 thereof. A top wall 20 defines the upper surface of the mattress.
The top wall has a raised portion 22, 24 adjacent to each side wall. A central portion 26 is disposed between the raised portions. Each raised portion has an inner surface 28 which commences at the central portion and slopes smoothly upwardly and outwardly and merges smoothly with an upper surface 30. The upper surface extends smoothly further outward and terminates at the side wall of the mattress.
The inner surface 28 and upper surface 30 together form one continuous curved surface which is smooth and free of edges. Each upper surface terminates at a side edge 32 which contacts the side walls of a bassinet or the bars of a crib should the mattress be used in such a bed.
In use, the mattress provides a comfortable and secure environment fer a baby.
The mattress is suitable for use in a crib and a bassinet. The mattress eliminates the need for extra bedding such as bumper pads and pillows thereby reducing the risk of suffocation. The rounded raised portions of my mattress serve the same purpose as bumper pads but without any of the shortcomings of such pads. The raised portions reduce the possibility that the baby will be trapped by the bars of a cradle.
The raised portions slope at a slight angle that makes it possible to position a baby on its side where the baby must not rest on its back for medical reasons.
It will be understood of course that modifications can be made in my mattress without departing from the scope or spirit of my invention.

Claims (2)

1. A mattress having upwardly extending walls at the front, rear and two sides thereof and a top wall which defines the upper surface of said mattress, said top wall having a raised portion adjacent to each side wall and a central portion disposed between said raised portions, each said raised portion having an inner surface which commences at said central portion and slopes smoothly upwardly and outwardly and merges smoothly with an upper surface, said upper surface extending smoothly further outward and terminating at the side wall to which such raised portion is adjacent, said inner surface and upper surface being smooth and free of sharp edges.
2. The mattress as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mattress has an imaginary longitudinal plane which extends between said front and rear walls and which is parallel to said side walls, said mattress being symmetrically disposed about said plane.
