Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A ductor roll assembly for use in transferring wet ink from a rotating fountain roll to a rotating distributor roll within a wet ink transfer system for a can decorating apparatus having a main drive system wherein the ductor roll assembly comprises at least one ductor roll but preferably comprises a plurality of ductor roll but each of which is movably mounted on a fixed support frame for movement into a contacting relationship with either the fountain roll or the distributor roll to transfer the wet ink. Individual variable control units are provided for each of the ductor rolls to move a desired number of them into the contacting relationship with the rotating fountain roll or the distrib-utor roll for any desired period of time so as to control the quantity and location of wet ink transferred from the fountain roll to the distributor roll by the desired number of the ductor rolls and wherein the control of the movement of each ductor roll is independent and separate from the main drive system.

Brief Descrlption of the Invention This invention provides actuating means for moving at lea~t one ductor roll into or out of contact with a fountaln roll or a distributor roll that i~ indèpendent and separate from the maln driving system of a can decorating apparatus.
15 In a preferred embodiment of the lnvention, each lnking statlon of a can decoratlng apparatus is provided wlth a support frame which 18 part of the maln support structure for the can decoratlng apparatus. A fountaln roll having a generally cylindrical outer perlpheral surface iB mounted for rotatlon on the support frame 50 that a portlon thereof moves through a supply of ln~ contalned in a pan supported on the support frame. The fountain roll rotates about a generally horl~ontal axis and is drlven by conventional drlve means as illustrated ln the Stirbis et al. patent.

Detailed Description of the Invention In general, Fig. 1 show~ a decorator apparatus comprislng a mandrel wheel means 30 for receivlng undecoratad can body members 32 from an lnfeed means 34. Can body member 32 are supported on a plurality of equally alrcumferential spaced mandrel means 36 for movement with the mandrel wheel means past a blanket wheel means 38 which carries a plurality of circumferentially spaced blanket ~egment mean~ 40 having ink and inked imagPs thereon. Each blanket segment means 40 engages the cylindrical outer peripheral surface of a can body member 32 to apply variable color ink and ink images thereon in the .Eorm of a label including a brand name, 30 printed matter, decorative images, etc. ~n overvarnish `

The wet ink transferring ~y~tem of this invention for transferring wet ink from the fountain roll 108 to the 05 distributor roll 130 is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 and comprises flve movably mounted ductor rolls 140. Although five movably mounted ductor rolls 140 are illustrated and described herein, it is understood that the wet ink trans~
ferring sy~tem may comprise at least one ductor roll 140 or i~ ;

The ink fountaln and transfer r,iystem of this invention 05 is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. ~ support frame 102 is fixedly mounted on the rlgid plate frame meane 6~. The wet ink transferring ~y~tem of this invention for transferring wet ink from the fountain roll 108 to the 05 distributor roll 130 is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 and comprises flve movably mounted ductor rolls 140. Although five movably mounted ductor rolls 140 are illustrated and described herein, it is understood that the wet ink trans~
ferring sy~tem may comprise at least one ductor roll 140 or i~ ;
10 any number of a plurality of ductor roll~ 140 other than the -five ductor roll~ 140. Each ductor roll 140 is mounted on its own shaft 142 80 a~ to be freely rotatable relative thereto and which shaft 142 ls secured in one end portlon 144 of a rotatable lever arm 146. A shaft 148 having ~;
reduced end portion~ 150 is fixedly mountPd on the support frame 102 by locating the reduced end portions 150 in mounting blocks 152 which are secured to the support frame 102 by headed threaded bolts 154. Each lever arm 146 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 148 for rotation relative thereto about an axis 156 that is ~ubstantially parallel to the axes of rotation 120 and 136. The other end portion 158 - : -of the lever arm 146 is rotatably mountsd on a pin 160 which ls fixedly secured ln a bifurcated end portlon 162 of a plston rod 164, each of which functlons as actuating means to move a lever arm 146. block 174. Each mountlng block 174 i~ fixedly secured to the support frame 102 by headed threaded bolts 176. Each ductor roll 140 ls mounted for rotatlon about an axis 178 that i5 ~ubstantially parallel with the axes of rotation 120, 136 and 156. Each ductor roll 140 has a generally S cylindrical outer peripheral surface 180 which is moved by a piston rod 164 into a contacting relatlonship with either the generally aylindrical outer perI]pheral surface 110 or 132 of the fountain roll 108 or the dlstributor roll 130 or not in contact with either. AB lllustrated in Fig. 4, the movement of each ductor roll 140 is through a very small di~tance such as between about 1/16 and 3/16 of an inch.
Variable control means 186 are provlded for controlling the movement of each piston rod 164 so as to maintain the contacting relationship of each ductor roll 140 with the `~

The operation of the wet ink transferring system of thi~ invention i9 explained ln relatlon to Fig. 3 whereln : -each of the duotor rolls 140 have been identified by one of the letters A through E. The number of ductor rolls 140 used to transfer wet ink from a fountain roll 108 to a distributor roll 130 at each of the inX transfer and fountain means 63, 64, 65, 66, 67 and 68 may be varied as desired.
For example, at ink station 63, the variable control means 186 may be programmed to move ductor rolls A, B and E at desired intervals into contact with the fountain roll 108 for a period of time and then bacX into contact with the ., . . . , . ~ , , ,,, ., ~:

Claims (20)
1. A ductor roll assembly for use in transferring wet ink from a rotating fountain roll to a rotating distributor roll within a wet ink transfer system for a can decorating apparatus having a main driving system comprising:
a support frame mounted at a fixed location;
a fountain roll having a generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface mounted for rotation on said support frame about a generally horizontal axis;
a distributor roll having a generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface mounted for rotation on said support frame about an axis substantially parallel to said axis of rotation of said fountain roll;
said fountain roll and said distributor roll being located to that said generally cylindrical outer peripheral surfaces thereof are spaced apart;
main driving means for rotating said fountain roll and said distributor roll;
inking means for providing a coating of wet ink on said generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface of said fountain roll;
at least one ductor roll having a generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface and mounted for rotation about an axis substantially parallel to said axes of rotation of said fountain roll and said dis-tributor roll;
movable means for mounting said at least one ductor roll for movement of its generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface into contact with said gener-ally cylindrical outer peripheral surface of said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll to transfer at least a portion of said wet ink from said fountain roll to said distributor roll;
actuating means for moving said movable means to move said at least one ductor roll into either of said contacting relationships;
variable control means for controlling said actuating means so as to maintain said contacting relationship of said ductor roll with said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll for any ]desired amount of time to control the quantity of wet ink transferred from said fountain roll to said dis-tributor roll; and said variable control means being independent and separate from said main driving system.
a support frame mounted at a fixed location;
a fountain roll having a generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface mounted for rotation on said support frame about a generally horizontal axis;
a distributor roll having a generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface mounted for rotation on said support frame about an axis substantially parallel to said axis of rotation of said fountain roll;
said fountain roll and said distributor roll being located to that said generally cylindrical outer peripheral surfaces thereof are spaced apart;
main driving means for rotating said fountain roll and said distributor roll;
inking means for providing a coating of wet ink on said generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface of said fountain roll;
at least one ductor roll having a generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface and mounted for rotation about an axis substantially parallel to said axes of rotation of said fountain roll and said dis-tributor roll;
movable means for mounting said at least one ductor roll for movement of its generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface into contact with said gener-ally cylindrical outer peripheral surface of said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll to transfer at least a portion of said wet ink from said fountain roll to said distributor roll;
actuating means for moving said movable means to move said at least one ductor roll into either of said contacting relationships;
variable control means for controlling said actuating means so as to maintain said contacting relationship of said ductor roll with said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll for any ]desired amount of time to control the quantity of wet ink transferred from said fountain roll to said dis-tributor roll; and said variable control means being independent and separate from said main driving system.
2. The invention as in claim 1 wherein:
said at least one ductor roll has an axial length which is substantially the same as the axial length of said rotating fountain roll and said rotating distributor roll.
said at least one ductor roll has an axial length which is substantially the same as the axial length of said rotating fountain roll and said rotating distributor roll.
3. The invention as in claim 1 wherein said movable means comprises:
a shaft fixedly mounted on said support frame;
at least one lever arm rotatably mounted on said shaft;
said at least one ductor roll rotatably mounted on said at least one lever arm at a location spaced from one end thereof: and at least a portion of said actuating means con-nected to the other end of said lever arm for applying a force thereto.

at least one lever arm rotatably mounted on said shaft;
said at least one ductor roll rotatably mounted on said at least one lever arm at a location spaced from one end thereof: and at least a portion of said actuating means con-nected to the other end of said lever arm for applying a force thereto.
4. The invention as in claim 3 wherein said actuating means comprises:
a cylinder and a piston slidably mounted therein;
and a piston rod mounted on said piston for movement therewith.

5. The invention as in claim 4 wherein:
said cylinder being pivotally mounted on said support frame: and said piston rod being pivotally mounted on said other end of said lever arm.

6. The invention as in claim 5 wherein:
said variable control means moving said piston in said cylinder.

an air cylinder pivotally mounted at one end thereof to said support frame and pivotally mounted at the other end thereof to said other end of said lever arm.

8. The invention as in claim 7 wherein said variable control means comprises:
a source of pressurized air;
conduit means for connecting said source to the top or bottom of said air cylinder;
valve means in said variable control means for opening or closing said conduit means; and valve control means for moving said valve means to an opened or closed position.

9. A ductor roll assembly as in claim 1 wherein said at least one ductor roll comprises:
a plurality of ductor rolls, each having a gener-ally cylindrical outer peripheral surface;
movable means for mounting, each of said ductor rolls for movement of its generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface into contact With said generally cylindrical outer peripheral surface of said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll to transfer at least a portion of said wet ink from said fountain roll to said distributor roll;
actuating means for moving said movable means of each of said ductor rolls into said contacting relation-ship with either said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll;
variable control means for controlling said actuating means for each of said ductor rolls to as to maintain said contacting relationship of each of said ductor rolls with either said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll for any desired amount of time to control the quantity and location of wet ink transferred from said fountain roll to said distributor roll; and said variable control means being independent and separate from aid main driving system.

actuating means for moving said movable means of each of said ductor rolls into said contacting relation-ship with either said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll;
variable control means for controlling said actuating means for each of said ductor rolls to as to maintain said contacting relationship of each of said ductor rolls with either said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll for any desired amount of time to control the quantity and location of wet ink transferred from said fountain roll to said distributor roll; and said variable control means being independent and separate from aid main driving system.
10. The invention as in claim 9 wherein:
each of said ductor rolls has an axial length which is substantially less than the axial length of said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll.

11. The invention as in claim 9 wherein each of said movable means comprises:
at least one shaft fixedly mounted on said support frame;
a plurality of lever arms rotatably mounted on said at least one shaft;
each of said ductor rolls rotatably mounted on one of said lever arms at a location spaced from one end thereof; and at least a portion of said actuating means con-nected to the other end of each of said lever arms.

a cylinder and a piston slidably mounted therein;
and a piston rod mounted on said piston for movement therewith.

an air cylinder pivotally mounted at one end thereof to said support frame and pivotally mounted at the other end thereof to said other end of said lever arm.

16. The invention as in claim 15 wherein each of said variable control means comprises:
a source of pressurized air;
a plurality of conduit means for connecting said source to the top or bottom of each of said air cylin-ders;
a plurality of valve means in each of said variable control means for opening or closing each of said conduit means; and valve control means for moving each of said valve means to an opened or closed position.

Method for use in transferring wet ink from a rotating fountain roll mounted at a fixed location to a rotating distributor roll mounted at a fixed location spaced from the rotating fountain roll using a ductor roll assembly within a wet ink transfer system for a can decorating apparatus having a main drive system comprising:
mounting at least one ductor roll on a fixed support frame for movement into contact with said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll;
controlling the movement of said at least one ductor roll so as to maintain said at least one ductor roll in contact with said fountain roll or said dis-tributor roll for any desired amount of time during the decorating operation so as to control the quantity of wet ink transferred from said fountain roll to said distributor roll; and controlling said movement of said at least one ductor roll independently and separately from said main drive system.
mounting at least one ductor roll on a fixed support frame for movement into contact with said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll;
controlling the movement of said at least one ductor roll so as to maintain said at least one ductor roll in contact with said fountain roll or said dis-tributor roll for any desired amount of time during the decorating operation so as to control the quantity of wet ink transferred from said fountain roll to said distributor roll; and controlling said movement of said at least one ductor roll independently and separately from said main drive system.
18. The invention as in claim 17 and further comprising:
using a double acting air cylinder to control said movement of said at least one ductor roll.
using a double acting air cylinder to control said movement of said at least one ductor roll.
19. Method for use in transferring wet ink from a rotating fountain roll mounted at a fixed location to a rotating distributor roll mounted at a fixed location spaced from the rotating fountain roll using a ductor roll assembly within a wet ink transfer system for a can decorating apparatus having a main drive system comprising:
mounting a plurality of ductor rolls on a fixed support frame for individual movement into contact with said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll;
controlling the movement of each of said plurality of ductor rolls so as to maintain each of said plurality of ductor rolls in contact with said fountain roll or said distributor roll for any desired amount of time during the decorating operation so as to control the quantity and location of wet ink transferred from an associated portion of said fountain roll to an associated portion of said distributor roll; and controlling said movement of each of said ductor rolls independently and separately from said main drive system.
mounting a plurality of ductor rolls on a fixed support frame for individual movement into contact with said rotating fountain roll or said rotating distributor roll;
controlling the movement of each of said plurality of ductor rolls so as to maintain each of said plurality of ductor rolls in contact with said fountain roll or said distributor roll for any desired amount of time during the decorating operation so as to control the quantity and location of wet ink transferred from an associated portion of said fountain roll to an associated portion of said distributor roll; and controlling said movement of each of said ductor rolls independently and separately from said main drive system.
20. The invention as in claim 19 and further com-prising:
using a plurality of double acting air cylinders to control said movement of each of said plurality of ductor rolls.
using a plurality of double acting air cylinders to control said movement of each of said plurality of ductor rolls.
