Address for Service: Coinplete Specification TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT FREDERICK HARPER and COLIN WALTER TAYLOR 16 Torquay Road, Sturt, and 1 Kegworth Street, Edwardstown, respectively, both in the State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia COLIN WALTER TAYLOR Care of R K MADDERN ASSOCIATES, 345 King William Street, Adelaide, State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia for the invention entitled: "IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO VEHICLE SUN VISORS" The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to-fme. us r This invention relates to improvements in vehicle sun visors of the type wherein a sun visor comprises a pair of spaced panels with a cavity therebetween, and is hinged with respect to a vehicle roof so that it can be positioned in front of, or to one side, of, a driver or passenger of a motor vehicle.
It is very well recognised that sun visors are particularly effective in some aspects in the vehicle but quite ineffective if the sun happens to be located 1: 0. at the position towards one end of a visor, and the main S object of this invention is to provide improvements whereby the visor can, in effect, be extended beyond the length to which it is necessarily limited when tc transverse to normal vision.
In an embodiment of this invention, the cavity of a visor contains a withdrawable extension plate of translucent or opaque material, the extension plate having friction means thereon which bears against the S spaced panels of the visor, thereby retaining the 4t(20. extension plate in the position at which it is set.
An embodiment of the invention is described hereunder in some detail with reference to and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a sun visor; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of extension arm; and SFig. 4 is a plan of Fig. 3.
In this embodiment, a sun visor 10 comprises a pair of panels 11 which are spaced from one another to define therebetween a cavity 12, and the cavity 12 is provided with an insertable visor extension plate 13.

The extension plate 13 is formed from a polymeric material having translucent characteristics, for example, "smoked perspex" ("perspex" being a registered Trade Mark), and thereby does not completely obstruct the view when withdrawn from the visor 10. The visor 10 comprises one or a pair of outwardly extending spring member 14 and an end finger grip portion by which the visor can be withdrawn or reinserted, the finger grip portion 15 being a thicker portion of the plate 13. The spring 14 is a flexible leaf spring and bears against an inner surface of a spaced panel 11, so that a firm frictional engagement always exists, such as is likely to prevent inadvertent movement of the visor or extension 13 with respect to the visor The invention has been described with respect to a slidable extension. However, clearly, the extension may be made to pivot with respect to the visor in lieu of sliding. The extension also can be arranged to extend from the other end instead of the end which is Jhown, if that is required. If the extension is made curved in shape, it can be made to curve around within the cab space of the vehicle adjacent the front body pillar.
The invention will be seen to be particularly simple, but is nevertheless of considerable value when used on a vehicle which may be subject to dazzling of a driver by the sun's rays entering a space in the window or windscreen of the cab which is otherwise not capable of being obscured by the sun visor.

Claims (1)

  1. 4- The claims defining the invention are as follows:- 1. Improvements in a vehicle sun visor of the type which comprises a pair of spaced parallel panels with a cavity therebetween, comprising an extension plate partly contained within the cavity but having one end, projecting therefrom, and a spring member on the plate which bears against an inner surface of one of said panels, such that there is frictional sliding engagement between said extension plate and said inner surface. 2. Improvements according to claim 1 wherein said projecting end comprises a finger grip portion. 3. Improvements according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said spring member is secured to an inner end of the extension plate. 4. Improvements according to any preceding claim wherein said finger grip portion is thicker than the remainder of the extension plate. Improvements in a vehicle sun visor substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Dated this 28th day of August, 1990.
