5 Super Athletes With Ties To Cumming

Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Cumming area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.
Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to spotlight five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. While this list is just a snapshot, there are countless others who have helped shape the rich sports culture in our area.
1. Colby Gossett (Football)
Cumming native and former NFL guard Colby Gossett attended Appalachian State University before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 NFL Draft. Over his career, Gossett has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons, contributing to their offensive lines with his skills and versatility.

2. Ivey Crain (Soccer)
Ivey Crain, a standout soccer player, gained recognition as Forsyth County Soccer Player of the Year during her time at Pinecrest Academy in Milton. She set records with 155 career goals and led her high school team to multiple state championship games. Now excelling in collegiate soccer, Crain continues to shine as a top scorer and All-CAA honoree for the William & Mary Tribe.
3. Quinn Murtha (Swimming)
Quinn Murtha of Cumming made waves in collegiate diving as a record-breaker and standout for the Seton Hall Pirates. He broke the school’s 1-meter dive record and dominated competitions, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter events multiple times. Murtha’s consistent, impressive performance earned him the title BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Men’s Athlete of the Week in February 2024.

4. Cate Cummings (Lacrosse)
Cate Cummings, a lacrosse and flag football star from Cumming, was a varsity athlete at West Forsyth High School. Named Forsyth County Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year in 2024, she also earned All-State honors for her dynamic play. Cummings now plays collegiate lacrosse while pursuing a degree in nursing at Kennesaw State University.
5. Austin Smith (Tennis)
Austin Smith, a former University of Georgia tennis standout from Cumming, was a four-time SEC Player of the Week during his collegiate career. Ranked as high as No. 22 in singles and No. 4 in doubles, Smith clinched critical matches for the Bulldogs, including thrilling wins over ranked opponents.
