When I was 8 or 9 years old, I discovered Dragon Ball, Astro Boy, and Speed Racer. I had no idea what anime was at the time. I wasn't crazy about any of them but there was something about Dragon Ball that I gravitated towards. I think what caught my attention was the unconventional humor, the story, and the character arcs compared to what you would find in conventional western cartoons. Later when I was around 12 or 13, I watched Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z. Around age 16, I started watching Rurouni Kenshin. I still wasn’t an anime junkie yet but I immediately loved Rurouni Kenshin and felt a sense of displaced nostalgia whenever I watched it. I watched that show religiously! I loved the historical setting, character development, OST, the way the characters connected and found meaning in their lives through each other, and of course the amazing fight scenes. I was hooked, and couldn't get enough. But it wasn’t until I watched Berserk, Death Note, and Hajime No Ippo as a young adult that I began watching different genres of anime, experimenting, and discovering my own preferences. To this very day, Rurouni Kenshin remains my all-time favorite anime!
