Madâʾin Salih is a pre-Nabataean, Nabataean and Roman site at the southern end of the Nabataean kingdom and the Roman province of Arabia. The volume (132 pages) contains reports by various authors on one of the gates of the rampart (Area 35), on the Roman fort excavated in the southern part of the city (Area 34), on the Nabataean sanctuary IGN 132 (Area 6), and on the residential unit excavated southwest of the latter. It also contains important study reports on the pottery, the so-called "owls of Hegra", which correspond to a Hellenistic period coinage from the Hijâz, on the camel bones of the Roman fort (Area 34), on the textiles discovered in the Nabataean tombs IGN 88, 97 and 116.1. It ends with two notes on the conservation and on physiochemical characterization of corroded metal artifacts. The report will be published in a printed form by the Saudi Commission for Tourism...

Numerous actualistic studies of butchery have been carried out by archaeologists using stone tools, often especially manufactured by the researchers (e.g. Schick & Toth 1993; Laroulandie 2000). In other instances, traditional butchery practices have been documented, but in most cases the artefacts used were metal. Examples come from the Nunamiut of Alaska (Binford 1981), the Bedouin herders of Israel (Klenck 1995), the Peul cattle herders of Mali (Chenal- Velardé 1996), the !Kung hunter-gatherers of Botswana (Yellen 1977), and semi-urban, urban and village communities from Algeria, France, and Sudan respectively (Chaix & Sidi Maamar 1992). Similarly, for a range of different communities, traditional food preparation and consumption practices have been documented and in many ...

The archaeofauna from one specific building—named Basement—was analyzed. This building was occupied during the last quarter of the second millennium BC and hosted collective activities. Our research focused on the remains discovered inside a pit (Husn Salut–US35) interpreted by the excavators as evidence for a ceremony connected with the archi- tectural renewal of the area: pottery shapes belong to types usually related to banquets and possibly rituals. The pit contained remains of at least fourteen goats (mainly females) four sheep, and two caprines. Adult animals predominate and butchery marks attest to the dismemberment and filleting of carcasses. The assemblage documents that collective consumption of mainly goat and some sheep meat was part of the ceremony. However, compared to the faunal remains from the entire Basement, the fauna from the pit shows no major differen...
