Chapel Of Disease

Chapel Of Disease is one of the most exciting metal bands out there at the moment, and one that has the courage to change and evolve. My first contact for an interview request with vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, Laurent, was back in October 2024. Despite a couple of postponements due to scheduling conflicts, and both of us getting sick, we managed to meet online on January 6th, 2025. For me, it was more than worth the wait and a great start to the new year, and I am very glad that I had the opportunity to chat about lots of things without any time pressure (hence the 74-minute video below). The only thing I forgot to ask him is what style of music he thinks his band plays right now, but it’s okay; who cares, really, if the music is this good?

Actually, I didn't have any time over the past few days to watch a 74-minute video, but when your favorite Greek staff member of all time interviews the most exciting metal band from your hometown in at least the last two decades, you just have to rearrange your priorities...

Laurent seems like a very cool guy, and especially what he says as an artist about AI and a fairer distribution of profits within the music industry really resonates with me.
By the way, I don’t think Chapel Of Disease have reached their peak yet. In a way, I’m even a little glad that, in my opinion, their last album wasn’t absolutely flawless (I still don’t find the clean vocals optimal, despite a certain growing-on-you effect), because it leaves room to surpass the already quite brilliant previous albums with their next release.
And I completely agree with you: in a few years at the latest, people will view The Storm and Echoes Of Light as absolute rock/metal classics. And that would be nothing less than a fair reward for a band that, like few other former death metal bands, has so boldly merged two genres.

Here’s the prog rock album from 1982 Laurent mentioned multiple times. Stylistically, it’s not really my cup of tea, but if you focus solely on the rather brilliant guitar work, it may become a little clearer what kind of artistic standard Laurent holds himself to and why his band sounds the way it does now.

Yeah, I listened to it as soon as the interview was finished. The guitar work is indeed indicative of what Laurent is going for. The style is totally my cup of tea, I am almost embarrassed that I did not know Winterhawk.

I also agree with the other points you make; the best Chapel Of Disease album has possibly not come yet. And he is such a nice guy, indeed.

Conversely, I listened to this whole thing as soon as you sent it to me, but I didn't have time to write any comments. Here's one at last.

I always appreciate any mention of Rory Gallagher. I also appreciate you asking the mandatory question; Scorsese is not really that unusual a choice, especially considering how much Chapel Of Disease have been taking cues from more traditional rock and heavy metal bands. He does have several highly acclaimed concert films in his catalogue, after all. I'm sure there are better fits out there, though. I'd have to spend some time seriously thinking about it.

This was a really interesting conversation from start to finish, and a lot of it is due to the fact that that's what it feels like: a conversation, not so much a formally structured interview. I was tuned in the whole time because you guys had such insightful things to say about the state of things in modern music - as a culture, as a business, as a personal project - and I found myself in agreement with a lot of what was said, particularly, as Starvynth also highlighted, in regard to AI and the financial side of music. It was a pleasure to listen to, surely one of my favorite interviews on this site.

I did listen to that Winterhawk album as well; it's a little outside what I would say I usually look for, but it was definitely an intriguing album, very well-performed and well-written. The Rush comparison you can hear from a mile away, and I could see the Judas Priest reference as well. I did like it, and I think I'll have to listen to it more in the future.

My main conclusion is that I need to listen to more Chapel Of Disease. I know I liked the one with the really long title, and then Echoes Of Light made a strong impression on me the way their previous stuff hadn't, but I still have yet to go back and listen to any of it over again. I need a closer listen of Echoes Of Light as well, because while I've enjoyed Chapel Of Disease over these years, they're not a band I have an active sense of, and so when you and many other people refer to these albums as future classics, I get intrigued. Certainly hearing about the band in such depth from Laurent himself makes me even more interested in getting to know them better.

Really well done, fantastic interview with one of my current favourite bands. I think I actually discovered them due to the review for the previous album on here. Me and my wife became obsessed with them to the point we followed them on tour for three dates when they toured with Sulphur Aeon. I've met Laurent and several other band members and they have all been really lovely people.
