I am working as an assistant professor assigned to Friedrich Vollhardt, Chair of Early Modern German Literature at LMU Munich.
Between October 2016 and March 2018 I served as an Acting Chair of German Philology at the German Department of Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.
My research interests span the cosmos of European literatures from the early modern era to the 19th century (and occasional adventures into the realm of contemporary authors). I am a currently a member of the research network "Lutheran Orthodoxy Revisited" (https://luthorth.hypotheses.org/), working on a subbproject on the poetic popularization of erudite Lutheran discourses. In 2015 I finished my habilitation thesis (i.e. my second major monograph) "Erzählgeheimnisse: Funktionen unzugänglichen und vorenthaltenen Wissens in der Erzählliteratur des mittleren 19. Jahrhunderts" ("Narrated Secrets - Narrative Secrets: Functions of withheld and inaccessible knowledge in mid-19th-Century Prose Fiction"), which I am currently preparing for its print publication. Another project I have been juggling in my mind for quite some time and recently returned to is a major paper on the connections between the fictional, factual and autobiographical writings of Per Olov Enquist, which follows the genealogy of his autobiography through his entire oeuvre and along a long tradition of critical self-examination that dates back to the Moravian Church, Bunyan's "A Pilgrim's Progress" and beyond. Apart from the interactions between literature and spirituality, books for children and young adults have been an interest of mine for many years. In 2016 and 2017 I served in the jury for Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis, the most renowned German awards in the area of children's and young adult literature, organised by the German branch of IBBY. I have co-organised conferences on hybrid literary genres and "geographic non-fiction" in 2014 and remain fascinated by the recently booming genre of geographic wimmelbooks (Städte-Wimmelbücher, Bymyldrebøker, ...) and its implications for the presentation of encylopedic knowledge.

Habilitation thesis (2015)
"Trutz-Nachtigal" ("Counter-Nightingale"), a collection of spiritual poetry by Jesuit Friedrich Spee, is counted among the most important publications of 17th century German poetry. This study attemps to reconstruct the poetological texture of Spee's poems by examining their central motifs and design strategies und to determine their achievement in the intersection of poetry and theology. Intertextual interferences, narrative nestings and different levels of hermeneutic impulses serve to incorporate the reader actively in the book's constitution of meaning, but also continually confront him with the limits of his cognitive and intellectual abilities. This manifests the mediating role of the "Counter Nightingale", which tries to lead man closer to God, yet always highlights his distance to the numinous and thus keeps renewing his desire for the inaccessible.
Clemens Brentano (1778-1842) is often considered as the prototypical Romantic poet. Many of his texts appear just as ruptured and torn as his existence and character, among them even the hermetic novel fragment "The shipwrecked galley slave of the Dead Sea", which combines four areas of discourse - love, trading, art, and religion - in a tense net of analogies. Thus, following the tradition of interpreting the "Galley slave" as an autobiographical roman a clef will not suffice to determine the specific profile of this text. This study attempts a coherent reading of the disparate fragment by means of a close semantic protocol, reconstructing its inner logic. The "Galley slave" emerges as a poetological text: Its narrator, the poet Benone, experiences how his images of the feminine become independent and start rebelling against their own creator. He loses control of both his lovers and his works of art.

"'But in our time theology tends to forget this far too easily.' David Friedrich Strauß reads Hermann Samuel Reimarus and quarrels with Heinrich Ewald."
Up until 1972 the complete text of Reimarus's famous "Apologie" isn't accessible to the public in any other version than the elaborate summary compiled by David Friedrich Strauß, who himself had scandalized Germany with his investigations into the life of Jesus. This article examines the poetic qualities of Strauß's book on Reimarus and situates its dialogical concept within the longsome controversy between the Tübingen School and orientalist Heinrich Ewald.
Dieser Aufsatz möchte das Textprofil bestimmen, das der intensiven Rezeption von L.M. Montgomerys "Anne auf Green Gables" in Schweden zugrundeliegt (u. a. im Werk Astrid Lindgrens). Er untersucht dafür die verschiedenen schwedischen Übersetzungen des Romans und analysiert die zahlreichen, oft umfassenden Änderungen, mit denen der Text an formale Vorgaben seiner Verleger und die vermeintlichen Bedürfnisse seiner Leser angeglichen wurde. Der Ursprungstext erweist sich dabei als äußerst zerbrechlich. Zwar wurde die schwedische Erstübersetzung von 1909 im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts mehrmals überarbeitet, jedoch nie an neueren Übersetzungsstandards gemessen. Eine Neuübersetzung könnte entscheidend dazu beitragen, "Anne" im literarischen Gedächtnis Schwedens lebendig zu erhalten.
"Transformed into Handwriting: Broadsheet Elements as Components of an Emblematic Manuscript."
This article examines the reception of several illustrated broadsheets in an emblematic manuscript from the early 17th century, with special emphasis on the interplay of different media in this process (broadsheets and emblem books, text and pictures, print and manuscript). In a particularly interesting and complex case the manuscript assimilates both a broadsheet with emblematic elements and the printed emblem book which this broadsheet in turn used as its source.

This article examines presented medialities and the mediality of poetic presentation in Eduard Mörike's novel "Maler Nolten".
"Hochland Correspondences: Private and Public Discussions of Catholic Cultural Journalism."
"Hochland" is considered one of the most influential and prominent German Catholic magazines in the first half of the 20th century. By examining some correspondences of its founder and editor-in-chief Karl Muth and its long-term editor Friedrich Fuchs, this essays discusses the relation of private and public exchanges about the aims, positions and challenges of Catholic journalism in the 1920s. A selection of Hochland contributions from the areas of cultural politics, literary aesthetics and theology are compared to letter exchanges related to them. Inhowfar do public and private discussions correspond to or complement each other? Are certain topics negotiated under different aspects in the protected atmosphere of a private correspondence?
"Opportunities for Heterodox Communication at and near the Altdorf Academy."
During the first decade of the 17th century Ernst Soner, a young professor of medicine at the Academy of Altdorf in Franconia gathered a group of students sharing his antitrinitarian notions. Their heterodox circle did not attract public attention until some years after Soner's death in 1612, when the behaviour of some of his former students outside Altdorf provoked an official enquiry. The paper approaches the problem of how the group could remain unnoticed for such a long time by examining different means of communication they used to interact with like-minded scholars both inside and outside the Academia Norica. It sketches a broad range of contact options in private and public spaces, from encoded names in letters to academic disputations. Particular attention is dedicated to emblematic media, among them Ernst Soner's album amicorum (a copy of Alciato's "Emblemata") and the medals awarded at the academy's annual celebration.

Ein Wimmelbuch ist eine besondere Form des textlosen Bilderbuchs. Es besteht aus einer Reihe von Panoramen, die mit einer immensen Anzahl von Figuren und Details nur so zu wimmeln scheinen. Solche Bücher bilden ein narratives Schwellengenre, das Kinder ein langes Stück auf ihrem Weg zur Lese- und Schreibkompetenz zu begleiten vermag und sie verschiedene Strategien entdecken läßt, mittels derer sie die Welt bewältigen und Geschichten aus ihr entwickeln können. Im Gegensatz zu Suchbüchern vertrauen Wimmelbücher darauf, daß ihre Leser sich auf eigene Faust einen Weg durch den Dschungel ihrer Fülle zu bahnen vermögen; sie versuchen deshalb nicht, die Aufmerksamkeit der Leser durch explizite Suchaufträge gezielt auf bestimmte Details zu lenken. Erwachsene Mitleser werden durch visuelle Anspielungen auf eine Vielzahl weiterer Bücher zusätzlich herausgefordert und motiviert. Damit ermöglichen Wimmelbücher zahlreiche Lektüreweisen und fordern kleine und große Leser zu einer höchst aktiven Rezeption heraus, die sich mit vollem Recht als eine Form des Spielens beschreiben lässt. Besprochen werden u. a. Werke von Ali Mitgutsch, Thé Tjong-Khing und Rotraut Susanne Berner.
"Moralistic Reading Potentials in Early Modern German Literature."
German literature is considered a latecomer in the field of moralist literature; anthropological impulses from the Romance literatures that lead to complex, unsystematical and open forms discussing human nature and behaviour were taken up only in the 18th century. This article examines inhowfar already German texts from the 17th century might have inspired "moralist readings" by making their readers ponder or question simple moral instructions. Authors discussed include Julius Wilhelm Zincgref (Facetiae Pennalium, Apophthegmata), Georg Philipp Harsdörffer (Ars Apophthegmatica, Schauplätze), and Friedrich von Logau (Sinn-Getichte).
"On the Polyphonic Composition of Zincgref's Scandalous Book 'Facetiae Pennalium'."
Julius Wilhelm Zincgref's "Facetiae Pennalium", published anonymously in 1618, use a hybrid combination of facetious tales on one hand, character sketches in the tradition of Theophrastus on the other hand to criticize quixotic, stay-at-home scholars and their fatal influence on contemporary society. The paper examines the polyphonic texture of this book and the function of its different parts. The analytical "Characterismi" are interpreted as an intentional contrast to the narrative "Facetiae", since their structure imitates that of an academic discussion and thus presents the reader with the impression of an intact erudite culture, namely a group of real scholars debating about their pseudo-academic colleagues. In the the expanded 1624 edition Zincgref sharpens his original criticism by suggesting a connection between unsound scholars and the current - disastrous - state of political affairs in Palatia and focusing on the problem of princely education: Erudition and education are closely connected to political responsibility.
Dieser Aufsatz geht einigen Spuren nach, die Lucy Maud Montgomerys "Anne auf Green Gables" in Leben und Werk Astrid Lindgrens hinterlassen hat. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den "Madita"-Bänden. Abgesehen von etlichen kleineren Parallelen zwischen den Hauptfiguren der beiden Erzählwelten fallen bei Lindgren wie Montgomery einige Episoden auf, in denen die Protagonisten im wahrsten Sinn des Wortes mit Literatur interagieren und dabei Gedichte und Erzählungen in ihre Lebenswirklichkeit übertragen - bzw. sich selbst in diese Texte hineinspielen. Solche poetischen Spiele spiegeln Lindgrens eigene frühe Beschäftigung mit ihrem Lieblingsbuch und stimulieren ähnliche Formen transtextueller Rezeption, die die Texte über die papierenen Grenzen des Buches hinaus ins Leben ihrer Leser eindringen läßt.

„The structure of my paper? Let's see: (A) introduction – (B) main section – (C) conclusion …“ As long as the problem you are writing about is rather simple and limited, it is relatively easy to organise your ideas and mould them into a coherent text. But as soon as you are writing about more complex problems, you will be facing increasingly confusing amounts of bulky material that cannot be handled with a standard disposition anymore. There it is a key challenge of our academic work to is develop a structure corresponding to our topic, our method, and our line of reasoning. In this workshop we will be experimenting with different approaches and techniques to search and find such a structure. Please bring a current writing project of your own.
Dieser Workshop befasst sich mit dem Beitrag von Intuition und "Bauchgefühl" zu wissenschaftlicher Kreativität und Innovation. Anhand verschiedener (stark improvisatorischer) Schreibtechniken, Übungen und Arbeitsstrategien werden wir uns mit jenen im akademischen Diskurs kaum thematisierten Anteilen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsprozesses beschäftigen, die der durchgängig rational disziplinierten Endfassung eines Textes vorausgehen.
