About
The 90s Sucked or Gross, That Was Really Sexist is a webcomic and reaction image in which a woman uses Netflix to watch a movie from the 1990s that she used to love and realizes that it is full of sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia, saying in the last panel, "The 90s sucked." The comic was created by artist Dublah and was originally posted to Tumblr in March 2015. Over the following years, it became the subject of memes as a reaction image, typically used to relay the feeling of rewatching or reexperiencing something you used to love that you find to be offensive or bad upon reexperiencing it.
Origin
On March 7th, 2015, now-deactivated Tumblr[1][2] user Dublah posted a webcomic in which a woman excitedly plays a 1990s movie on Netflix that she used to love. As the movie plays, she slowly realizes that the movie is more offensive than she remembers, saying, "Gross, that was really sexist," "That seemed kindaโฆ racist," "I didn't remember this movie being so homophobic," and, "I guess I forgot about all this transphobia." In the final panel she expresses, "The 90s sucked." The post garnered over 41,000 notes in 10 years.
The comic was reposted on social media several times over the next few years. On June 18th, 2017, it was reposted to the subreddit /r/ComedyCemetery,[3] garnering over 800 upvotes in eight years. On December 7th, 2020, it was reposted to /r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns,[4] garnering over 8,000 upvots in five years. On April 2nd, 2022, X[5] user @Internet_TLCM, also known as The Left Can't Meme, reposted the comic, writing, "I love the 90's ๐๐," garnering over 6,100 likes in three years.
On October 14th, 2024, X[6] user @Krazyman50Real posted the selection of the comic where the character realizes how offensive the movie is, writing, "Replaying Satcherzbop in 2024," garnering around 120 likes in three months. "Satcherzbop" is a Geometry Dash level that features racist slurs throughout.[7] This is the earliest known version of the meme.
Spread
The meme continued to spread in early 2025. On January 8th, 2025, X[8] user @Spacecadetnixon posted the meme alongside the caption, "How it feels to listen to your childhood favourite parts of the Nixon tapes ๐๐," garnering over 20,000 likes in five days.
