Crawl[1], called Guardon (ガードン) in the Japanese manual[2], is a crab-like Badnik from the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 found in Casino Night Zone. It has a bumper included, so if you try to perform a spin attack from the front it'll bump you away! So, you have to jump over it and quickly attack from the back as the only method of destroying it.
A single Crawl made an appearance behind two Cluckers in the "Clucker's Defense" Bonus Stage in the 16-bit version of Sonic Spinball. To destroy it, the player must hit its sides with the pinballs until its shield is destroyed, then whack the crab from the front. As long as it has its shield up, the player cannot hit it from the front as it will simply bounce the balls back.
It has also appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I's Casino Street Zone with little change in design, and its attack pattern is exactly the same as in the classic games. Likewise, the Badnik appears relatively unchanged in its appearance in the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations where it appears once again in Casino Night. While Classic Sonic has to deal with it the usual way, Modern Sonic can easily plough through it by boosting.
Crawl also appears in both versions of Sonic Lost World, keeping the same design from previous appearances with the exception of having legs. In the Wii U/PC version, it appears in Frozen Factory Zone 3, Silent Forest Zone 4 and Lava Mountain Zone 3, and simply have to be hit from behind. In the 3DS version, it can be found in Sky Road Zones 1 and 2, and in this version they are capable of firing projectile waves at the player. If the player uses a Somersault Kick at the same time when it attacks, they will cancel out the attack and stun the Badnik, allowing them to take it out.
The earliest known iteration of Crawl was labelled Banper (バンパー) by Hirokazu Yasuhara, being an enemy with springs designed to send Sonic flying if jumped on. Sketches suggest it was designed for "Desert Zone" and "Rock Zone", before becoming a crab and moving to Casnio Night Zone.
